To say I had not been excited would be harsh. To say I had been looking forward to leaving would be rude. Nonetheless, these were the actual feelings I had and let slip out of my lips. I watched his face grow cold, stoney with annoyance. He probably wished I wasn't attending either. Looking back now, I probably should have stayed home and watched old movies. I'd be in a much better place than I currently am drowning in.

He drove in silence that night. His tux only wrinkled in the spot where I had clamped it wrong on the hanger. The wedding band glowed in the streetlights, making his hand look tan in the dark. I wanted to reach for his other hand, hold it like I used to when we were younger and actually in love with one another. I slipped it under my thigh, my engagement ring dug into the pantyhose. It would undoubtably leave a snag.

"You didn't have to come," he reminded me as he parked in a spot purposely far from the door. I glanced at my five inch heals.

"I thought you would want me to be here," I said, slowly preparing to leave the car.

"You didn't really ask me my opinion," he sighed, pushing the door open.

I knew he didn't want me here. I didn't want to be. It was mainly just to put a married hand on his, to ward off the others who were after him. What a selfish way to spend an evening.

Here I was.

One would cut the tension between us as we walked towards the door. I wanted to wrap my arm around his. Feel the warmth as I shivered in my shawl. To lean in a smell the after shave he had been using for years. I longed to feel the way he used to wrap his around me, sighing into me and inviting me to lean even closer.

I was forever waiting for him to invite me closer. Waiting on him to snap back and remember the one at home. Waiting for him to return home. Waiting on the slow snapping of each heartstring to heal back together.
