The little girl’s calloused feet felt no pain as she raced towards the breaking waves. They knew the worn trail well and instinctively avoided the sharp rocks jutting up from the ground and the places where treacherous seaweed grew in abundance.

To an untrained ear silence reigned. But the little girl could hear a fierce wind ripping through the leaves of nearby trees, and so she felt no surprise as it suddenly engulfed her frail body, causing her dark hair to billow behind her and her pink pinafore to slap against her exposed thigh.

She knew she had reached the shore when she could feel the spray of water cool her burning cheeks, hear the thundering crash of water colliding with the rocks, and smell the salty breeze. The little girl stepped forward and was immediately greeted by a rush of salt water flowing over her feet, washing away the sand that had accumulated on them.

A smile crept across her face.

Even so, she still felt lost. Her eyes stared without seeing. And though she could sense the world around her, everthing was dark. But it was not night.
