On my sixteenth birthday, Mama took me to buy my first gown. In a horse-drawn carriage with bells on bridles we entered New Orleans with all eyes upon us. The excitement of the city was an electrical charge I felt in the air, everyone waiting for the ball on Saturday. All of the captains of industry would attend, at least those who had not found a wife. My sister, Yvette would accompany me and we would take our places among the women in pastel gowns, the new placee, to be chosen as wives. This choice would secure our futures, if not in society, at least in contract.

" Yvette, demain, je vais mettre une robe, bleue."

" A blue dress, Monique? I shall wear a soft peach with a matching parasol and be the belle of the ball. Here, let me braid your hair. We will gather it high in a gemstone clip. C'est belle!"

As I look back on that evening before the dance, I see how very innocent we were. It was a fairy tale we thought we were walking into, but it was no more than a state of prostitution, human bondage, legalized by white society, for the one- quarter black women of mixed blood and their masters who exploited them. Yvette was not as lucky as I. I was chosen by a kind and gentle man and I remained with him until his death. His money allowed me to send slaves to the north and to freedom.

Yvette's fate was sealed when she was chosen by a planter and river boat captain of the slave trade in St. Louis. He beat her as he did his slaves. You will see as my story progresses that this was his downfall in a bloody death, covert and unpunished.

No one injures the sister of Monique Bellecourt.
