To Nonno

Since your passing many years ago now, I've been told stories about you; the old man I was afraid to hug, because you'd always try to bite my wrist to "give me a watch".

I know that was your way of showing affection. I know you letting me help fill your cigarettes with that odd red contraption was also another way of showing affection.

What I didn't know was you building me a sandbox so I could play in it to my heart's content.

What I didn't know was you following me to school, making sure I would be safe. Even though I was already a stubborn, independent child walking to kindergarten just a couple of blocks away from home. I never knew until others told me about it.

I did know you'd wake up in the middle of the night for a head count, making sure all your grandchildren were safe during the ice storm.

And right now, I hope you're still watching over me from above, when I need it most.
