The Gauntlet

The Gauntlet is an area

that many dread to walk along,

we always try to avoid that path

but sometimes plans go wrong.

Here they always line up,

the lads that’re wearing boots,

anyone approaching hears

the heckles and the hoots.

The only way to run it

is to take it nice and slow

and even when you hear their words

don’t let on so they will know.

All those pointed comments,

the obscenities they spew,

are really just the weapons

that they are aiming straight at you.

The road it seems to stretch on,

you cannot see the end;

you know you have to keep it quiet

and don’t bother to defend;

for if you do retaliate

it’s like a red rag to a bull,

their animosity will increase

to a power that is on full.

Don’t think that you’ll escape them

just because you’re not female,

lads that pass in ones or twos

they’ll happily regale.

So shut your ears, don’t listen,

keep your eyes trained upon the ground,

Lock up any feelings

That could inadvertently be found.

Whatever tripe they aim at you

let it float on past,

for the ending of The Gauntlet

has come into view at last.
