Scent.

Just a run-of-the-mill bus journey until she sits on the seat beside me. I was looking out of the window, never saw her even approach. And I have no idea what she looks like.

It is the smell. No, that sounds wrong, like I find it unpleasant. The scent – that’s better. Not strong, not one that almost catches in your throat; but subtle, exotic, curiously sensual.

Still looking out of the window, I find myself drawn to move closer. Not so that I am touching her, just so that I can breathe more of that scent in. For a moment I shut my eyes, let my mind drift and conjure up an image of the woman beside me.

Two stops further and she gets up. I don’t look, don’t want to see what she really looks like. I much prefer to cling on to the image that I have built.
