Outside

How many weeks is it since I ventured out of this room? How many months? I’ve lost count. Don’t remember! But today they have decided I will go to the store.

I’ve argued, believe me. But they won’t listen.

A five minute walk, that’s all. Quiet streets and a corner store. They say they are letting me start gently but it is the noise that gets to me.

Vehicles – their engines roar! The sound rattles through my head, makes me cower, pull away.

Only two other customers in the corner store. Their chatter swoops and dives around me, making me dizzy, disorientated. When I go to the check-out, say thanks, my voice seems to come out so loud. So echoing! I’m worried, embarrassed that I just might have shouted.

Back to my room, to the quiet. I am so used to the silence now. Noise is like an alien invader.
