Truth is Love

Jake and Madeline sat on the tailgate to his truck staring at the stars, taking in the cold of the beautiful night. Jake looked up at the stars with a worried look on his face which he tried to hide, but to no avail was able to hide it from Madeline.

"What's trouble you?" Madeline asked, looking into his deep brown eyes.

"Than why do you look worried about something?"

"I told you, it's nothing. I am just tired."

She didn't believe him. Something was wrong for she knew Jake, and this was not how he normally acted. Jake's face began to sweet and his palms became sweaty. He rubbed his hands through his hair, taking off his hat, which she knew he only did when he was stressed about something.

"Jake, you are not acting normal. What's going on?"

"Okay, I'll tell you, but you must not tell anyone," replied Jake.

"Okay, I won't."

"So why are you acting this way?"

Jake sat still and quiet for a while before gathering up enough courage to speak.

"Okay Madeline. You see, yesterday I took my final exam for school and made a 100."

"Okay? So why should you be acting this way if you received such a high score?"

"Well, I never made that score. . . .I cheated."

Madeline didn’t know what to say. All these years she had known Jake, she never would have guessed he would cheat in school. Jake looked terrible now.

His face turned beet red with embarrassment, as he looked at the ground.

"Why would you do that, Jake?"

"I don't know. I wasn't ready for the test so thought I was going to make a failing grade."

"But cheating is wrong, you need to go tell them."

"Why?" asked Jake.

She stopped for a minute, trying to find the words to convince her Jake that he needed to go tell on himself to the teachers. She was younger than Jake, so found it hard to find words. But after really thinking about it for a while she said, "You see Jake, when you cheated, you didn't just lie to your teachers, your friends, me, and to God, but you also cheated and lied to yourself."

"How did I cheat myself?" asked Jake.

Because you deprived yourself of what you could have had, but chose to not give it your all, and fell short due to your own fault."

"I have never looked at it that way."

"You really need to go tell them Jake."

"Okay. I will go tell, but can you come with me?"

"Sure! Now let's go tell them."

The next morning, in the gym, the entire class was invited to a meeting where the students who made the highest scores would be honored. When the teacher called Jake to the stage, he left Madeline's side and walked over there. Grabbing the mike Jake looked towards Madeline and said, "I have something to confess to all of you. I do not deserve this, someone else does. . .I cheated on the exam." His teacher looked surprised at him.

"Why?" the teacher asked.

"Cause I failed to study hard enough."

"So why did you come and confess in front of the entire class?"

"Because what I did didn't just hurt me, but also the class, for I deprived one of them from having my spot."

"Also, I learned from someone, that in cheating, you just don't lie to your friends and teachers,  but also to yourself and you actually cheat yourself. Because, you deprive yourself of what you could have, by not doing what you should do."

With that, Jake just stood there and took in the staring crowds, and the shocked, but at the same time impressed, teacher. Not expecting it, the students suddenly started to clap and stand up. Jake felt the teacher's hand on his shoulder, so turning around, he looked his teacher in the eye while she said, "Jake, what you did was wrong, but I am so proud that you took the courage to come up here in front of the entire class and confess what you did was wrong."

"Thank you."

"Just never do it again."

"I won't."

Out from the crowd came Madeline. She run up to Jake and embraced him.

"I am so proud of you! That is the man I want to have, Jake."

"Thanks to you, Madeline."

"Just promise me one thing."

"That you will never cheat again."

Jake looked into Madeline's eyes and said with a reassuring voice, "Never again. I promise." With that, throwing her arms around him, she said, "I love you, Jake," and kissed his tender lips.
