You Can Grow By Doing It Differently

The most important Competency and how to develop it?

Analyze complex situations and come up with simple and workable solutions

A skill is the ability to perform something well, you can call it the technical expertise. Skills can be acquired rather easily depending on the type and complexity of a particular skill. There are generally well defined levels and timelines to acquire a certain skill. While skill is what needs to be done accurately, competency is how effectively the challenge is viewed and addressed.

It requires considerable efforts to develop a competency and it can take much longer to master it compared to acquiring a new skill. A competency basically changes the way you think and address issues in various situations. It nurtures and develops you as a person and enables you to take on bigger responsibilities not only at workplace but also outside the organizational boundaries.

The solution of a problem should be simpler than the problem itself. It should be easier to implement and be cost effective. Some adventurous minds conceive resolutions to issues which create newer and bigger problems. They are called consultants…., on a lighter note!

You don’t want that kind of a solution, of course!

Developing the aforementioned competency is not easy but you don’t need the IQ of Albert Einstein to master it either. There are ways which would help you approach a problem with a completely different mindset.

  • Write down the problem on a piece of paper or on your computer but its better if you use the pen and paper, at least initially.
  • Break it down into components with ‘what if’ scenarios.
  • Write down possible options without much thought.
  • If you find it too hard to comprehend the issue, change your perspective. That is like when you are driving behind a large vehicle and have no idea as to what is ahead and then it just opens up the view as soon as you change lane. Use same concept when there appears to be a roadblock.
  • An example would be that a threat is viewed as an opportunity. How exciting!
  • Empathize. Visualize role change by putting yourself in other people’s shoes.
  • Evaluate options that you had noted down initially and critically analyze them.
  • Write down the optimum solution but do not present it. Leave it for later review depending on the urgency.
  • Once you are convinced that the solution that you want to propose is optimum, finalize it and forward it to the team for their review and feedback. Now you can prepare it in some better format like excel, word or power point presentation.
  • A Win-Win scenario must always be the guiding principle; add 'collaborative' to make it real sweet and more effective. The reason for that is in order to ensure sustainability, you must create and nurture true partnerships across the extended supply chain.

Don’t worry about the real life examples of using this approach to find solution to a complex problem, just grasp the idea. The most important thing to remember is, Change Your Perspective, some call it ‘To think outside the box’.

It applies to both the work life as well as your personal life.

That approach will elevate you, placing you at a higher position from where you can have a better view. To sharpen the saw, read good books.

Cheers!!
