The most important Competency and how to develop it?

‘Analyze complex situations and come up with simple solutions.’

A skill is the ability to perform something well, you can call it the technical expertise. Skills can be acquired rather easily depending on the type and the complexity and there are generally well defined phases or levels and timelines to acquire a particular skill. While skill is what needs to be done, competency is how effectively it is done. It requires considerable efforts to develop a competency and can take much longer to master a competency than acquiring a skill. A competency basically changes the way you think. It develops you as a person and enables you to take on bigger responsibilities not only in workplace but also outside the organizational boundaries.

The solution of a problem should be simpler than the problem itself. It should be easier to implement and should be cost effective. Some adventurous minds conceive resolutions to issues which create newer problems. They are called consultants…., on a lighter note! You don’t want that kind of a solution, of course!

Developing the aforementioned competency is not easy but you don’t need the IQ of Einstein to master it either. There are ways which would help you approach a problem with a completely different mindset.

  • Write down the problem on a piece of paper or on your computer but its better if you use pen and paper.
  • Break it down into components with ‘what if’ scenarios.
  • Write down the possible options without much thought.
  • If you find it too hard to comprehend the issue, change your perspective. That is like when you drive behind a large vehicle and have no idea of what is ahead and then it just opens up the view as soon as you change lane. Use same concept when there appears to be a blockage.
  • An example could be that a threat is viewed as an opportunity?
  • Empathize. Visualize role change by putting yourself in other’s shoes.
  • Evaluate the options that you had noted down and analyze them critically.
  • Write down the optimum solution but do not present it. Leave it for later review, depending on the urgency.
  • Once you are fully convinced that the solution you are proposing offers the optimum solution, finalize it and forward to the team for their review and feedback. Now you can prepare it in a better format like excel, word or power point presentation.
  • Win-win must always remain the guiding principle.

Don’t worry about the real life example of using this approach to find solution to a complex problem, just grasp the idea, the most important to remember is, change perspective, some call it ‘To think outside the box’.
