Harry Chapin--'Cat's In The Cradle:

***My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say, I'm gonna be like you, dad
You know I'm gonna be like you

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw, I said, not today
I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed
Said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son, I'm proud of you
Can you sit for a while?
He shook his head, and he said with a smile
What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later
Can I have them please?

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

NOT Harry Chapin--'S**t's In The Fire'

***Nightmare arrived just the other day,

supposedly a man, but just the part he plays

There were bills to sign, too overwhelmed to say

Snuck in the door while we were turned away

He told himself, 'You're the all-powerful leader now, Don,

yeah, you're president now"

And the shit's in the fire, world, nothing you can do,

little baby man, and we're so screwed

How bad will it get, Don,

guess we'll find out soon,

and we'll stick together 'til then, dudes,

but we'll be so f****d by then

My son turned 10 just the other day,

Asked me a question, didn't know what to say

"Come on, Dad, what were y'all drinking, eh?

Please tell me it'll be okay."

I couldn't lie to him, I said, 'be afraid!'

and I watched his smile dim and fade.

He said "my future's really f****d, Dad,"

I said, "I cannot disagree, son, you know I can't disagree"

And the shit's in the fire, world, nothing you can do,

little baby man, and we're so screwed

How bad will it get, Don,

guess we'll find out soon,

and we'll stick together 'til then, dudes,

but we'll be so f****d by then.

Well, he came from school just the other day,

still harping on me, still didn't know what to say

I'd had 10 beers and wasn't feeling too proud,

He came through the door, and I went down

He said, "holy shit, you're bombed again, Dad,

how many of those have you put away?"

If I help you, do you think you can stand, you're so bad'

Said, "I can't believe what I've done, son,

I voted for a joke, and now it can't be undone"

And the shit's in the fire, world, nothing you can do,

little baby man, and we're so screwed

How bad will it get, Don,

guess we'll find out soon,

and we'll stick together 'til then, dudes,

but we'll be so f****d by then

And when I recall my vote, I'm filled with such regret,

yet it occurs to me hasn't been 100 days yet

I looked at him, and he looked at me

and I felt like a douche for what I've caused to be

You see wishful thinking overwhelmed common sense,

and now I long to re-climb that fence, Don,

our normal politics is all but gone

Now my son looks at me like I'd lost my mind,

and I have to agree, no other reasons that I could find

and as I looked at him it occurs to me,

He'll be so much smarter than me, boy,

he'll be so much smarter than me

And the shit's in the fire, world, nothing you can do,

little baby man, and we're so screwed

How bad will it get, Don,

guess we'll find out soon,

and we'll stick together 'til then, dudes,

but we'll be so f****d by then, Don,

you know we're so f****d then
