This is one of the Short Stories I've posted on my blog. It's told from the point of view of a detective working a cold murder case with hardly any clues. Working late on Halloween night with a surprise gift.

It's Halloween night and the station is empty. The Chief, detectives, and other officers are out taking their children all around town, collecting all kinds of sweet treats. I am yet at my desk, poring over an open case file. An unsolvable murder case, like the game of Clue, except the game ends. So many empty spaces...and no time to look for clues.

Only three playing cards were left at each of the three crime scenes. The first hit; a night club. The owner was poisoned with his own preferred drink, an Absinthe Club Special. The second; a wealthy woman in her later years, strangled and choked with her own strand of diamonds. Last of all a gardener, bludgeoned to death with his own gardening spade.

The Ace of Clubs was under the first victim's drink, the Ace of Diamonds was found in the woman's mouth, the Ace of Spades was taped to a seed packet held tight in the gardener's fist. Everything else was immaculately clean; no fibers, prints, or DNA evidence of any kind. Another agent enters the station, a good friend and partner of mine. He carries a bouquet of crimson red roses, each blossom in perfect full bloom. Confusion is tantamount in his eyes as he hands me the vase.

'Here's the card. It's sealed up good.' He says.

The envelope is small and devoid of any writing. Sealed with crimson wax in the shape of a heart. Inside is a card. A simple playing card. The Ace of Hearts to be exact. I reach for my gun, only to find it pointing at my heart.
