Shattered Reality

Paper blanketed the floor like shards of broken glass.

A memory shattered just like that.

An old leather bound journal beyond repair

sits atop an old oak desk.

As a slight breeze carries out the last of its tears.

A man sits stagnant in his chair,

trying to move on from the fact that

daydreams are nothing but nightmares.

That just don’t turn out to be as bad.

He looks down towards a family photo

as rain drops start falling from his eyes.

Taking the photo out of the frame he reads off the three names.

“Amelia (4), Zoey (26), Caleb (24)” his voice stuttering and gasping for air.

He doesn’t believe in happily-ever-afters.

Only that time will soon come for us all,

that living is a false term

because

All most of us ever do

is just exist.
