It  was  a  normal  night  like  any  other.  My  15  year  old  self  was  jumping  around  the  room  with  my  eldest  brother’s  girls.  Being  with  them  always  reverted  me  back  to  my  childish  self.  I  couldn’t  help  it,  we  had  a  very  close  and  unbreakable  bond.  Later on,  as  reluctant  as  we  all  were,  I  followed  my  sister-in-law’s  command  to  once  again  combine  with  my  more  mature  and  motherly  side  to  help  the  girls  prepare  for  bed.  They  put  up  a  good  fight,  but  I  managed  to  have  them  tucked  in  an  hour  later,  to  my  sister-in-law’s  delight.

Since  I  was  also  spending  the  night  there,  it  didn’t  take  me  long  to  slide  in-between  them.  There  were  two  rooms  upstairs,  the  girls’  room  and  a  guest  room.  The  girls  always  managed  to  convince  me  to  sleep  with  them  whenever  I  stayed  over,  their  puppy  eyes  made  refusing  them  mission  impossible  multiplied  by  a  thousand!

Since  their  room  had  a  bunk  bed,  we  were  in  the  guest  room  as  always.  Now  their  fairly  new  house  wasn’t  completely  furnished  as  the  guest  bedroom  still  lacked  a  bed,  so  keep  in  mind  that  instead  of  a  bed,  there  was  a  king-sized  mattress  on  the  ground  in  the  room  for  us.  It  didn’t  take  long  for  me  to  wander  off  to  dreamland.

It  was  the  middle  of  the  night  when  my  eyelids  sleepily  fluttered  open,  I  needed  to  take  a  quick  trip  to  the  bathroom.  I  hesitantly  abandoned  the  warmth  of  my  mattress  to  go,  luckily  it  was  about  10  steps  away.  As  I  left  the  bathroom  to  return  to  bed,  I  noticed  that  my  nieces’  bedroom  door  was  slightly  cracked  opened.  In  my  hazy  and  drowsy  state  I  began  to  reach  for  the  door,  half-thinking  about  closing  it  before  joining  my  one  and  only  soul-mate,  slumber.  I  was  just  an  inch  away,  my  fingertips  about  to  touch  the  cool  metallic  doorknob  when  suddenly………

“YOU  ALL  ARE  STILL  AWAKE?!?!?!?!”

The  voice  echoed  throughout  the  household  in  an  ear-piercing  volume,  which  could  easily  awaken  the  whole  neighborhood.  The  voice  didn’t  completely  register  in  my  mind  as  time  suddenly  went  in  slow  motion.  My  hand  abruptly  froze  from  completing  its  journey  as  my  breathing  hitched.  My  heart  paused  from  completing  another  beat,  maybe  for  a  lot  longer  than  it  should,  while  my  eyes  widened.  Horror  had  erupted  within  my  very  being,  soon  engulfing  myself  in  its  flames.  Adrenaline  was  quickly  entering  my  blood,  spreading  throughout  my  entire  body  as  I  went  into  survival  mode.  It  was  fight  or  flight,  and  in  that  instant,  my  mind  chose  flight.

As  unexpectedly  as  it  slowed  down,  time  resumed  its  normal  pace.  My  hand  flew  back  to  my  side,  at  a  speed  which  could  even  make  lightning  envious,  as  my  heartbeat  was  pumping  a  hundred  miles  within  the  minute.  Immediately  forming  an  escape  plan  within  my  mind,  I  literally  covered  the  10  step  journey  from  the  bathroom  to  the  mattress  in  two  jumps!  Reaching  the  mattress  I  did  the  first  stunt  in  my  entire  existence  since  my  existence  was  established  in  the  world.  I  glided  along  my  side  to  become  flawlessly  sandwiched  between  the  mattress  and  the  blanket.  I  glided  along  my  side  as  if  I  was  riding  down  a  perfectly  curved  slide  in  the  parks,  or  like  in  the  movies  when  the  hero  slides  underneath  the  closing  door  to  get  to  the  other  side.  Now  hidden  beneath  the  safety  of  my  blanket,  I  ignored  my  racing  heart  and  shaken  self,  instantly  embracing  the  darkness.

As  my  eyes  flickered  due  to  the  sunlight  streaming  from  the  windows,  I  rose  from  my  mattress,  noticing  the  absence  of  my  precious  angels.  But  truthfully  that  wasn’t  on  my  mind,  not  at  all.  I  was  trying  to  fathom  the  huge  amount  of  relief  swelling  within  my  heart,  as  if  it  never  expected  my  awakening.  Demanding  my  mind  to  explain  why,  the  memories  came  rushing  back  at  me  like  a  freight  train.  Shuddering  when  it  came  to  mind,  I  swiftly  folded  the  blanket  before  entering  the  bathroom  to  freshen  up.

Skipping  down  the  steps,  I  united  with  my  adoring  nieces  at  the  dinning  table  for  breakfast.  My  sister-in-law  placed  a  plate  of  deliciously  steaming  hot  pancakes  before  my  eyes.  Gazing  at  her  to  thank  her,  it  suddenly  hit  me!

“YOU’RE  THE  ONE  WHO  SCARED  ME  TO  DEATH  LAST  NIGHT!”

My  nieces  jumped  in  their  seats  as  she  turned  back  to  face  me,  raising  an  eyebrow  while  throwing  a  questioning  look  my  way.  Sighing  as  I  slumped  in  my  seat,  I  relayed  everything  that  occurred  the  previous  night.

By  the  time  I  was  done,  those  two  angels  were  staring  at  me  in  awe  of  the  stunt  I  pulled  while  my  sister-in-law  was  enthusiastically  laughing  at  the  scare  she  gave  me.  Apologizing,  she  enlightened  me  that  she  saw  my  shadow  and  assumed  that  I  was  with  the  girls,  trying  to  sneak  into  their  room  since  that  was  where  they  kept  all  their  toys  and  games.  Sitting  at  the  table  with  us  with  her  own  plate  of  breakfast,  we  all  had  another  laugh  before  we  enjoyed  our  meal.
