Oh, Brother!

I’ve just watched me brothers and me sister go bounding off, pouncing on each other as they go. Me, well, I’m stuck here minding the chicks. ‘Leo,’ I asks meself, ‘how do ya always get yerself into these things?’

It was me own fault this time. I have to take full blame. When the last batch of chicks hatched, I couldn’t help meself. I had to go and have a bit of a chase around. Not that I touched any of them, mind you, I wouldn’t have done that. But I ruffled their Mom’s feathers, and after a good ol’ henpecking I said I’d watch the next batch. So here I am, while the others go shooting off up trees and stalking pigeons.

There’s somethin’ a bit odd with these chicks though. They’ve not really moved much and haven’t made so much as a cheep. In fact, they’re still partly wearing their eggs. I flex me claws, thinking. Maybe they’re in need of a bit of help shedding those shells. Should I offer a paw? Nah! Better wait awhile. Someone might spot me an’ misinterpret me motives, set the mother on me again........

It’s tiring jus’ laying here though. Who can blame me for having a bit of a stretch out in the sun. The warmth is makin’ me dozy. And these two still seem quiet enough. A stranger pair of chicks I’ve never seen. But a promise is a promise and I’ll keep an eye on ‘em until their Mom comes back. I’ll just do it through closed eye-lids!

The sniggerin’ wakes me. Momma Hen and me siblin’s. Through half-open eyes I see the chicks ha’ still not moved and then I get it. She wouldn’t ha’ trusted me with the real deal. They’ve tricked me well ‘n’ good. But this sun, it’s still shinin’ and I’m all set to go back to snoozin’. I guess they’d say I got egg on me face, but I’ll get me own back.........One day!
