It was six’o clock in the morning and unnaturally hot when the moving truck arrived, pulling up to the curb with a halting screech. Elise had been awake since three thirty, plagued by insomnia, cleaning her new home (that she and Claire had moved into the day before) with a nervous, manic energy. By the time the men with the moving company she had used knocked on her door, she was slick with perspiration and her long pale blond hair was in disarray, parts of it damp and plastered to her neck with sweat. She was exhausted and the lids of her icy blue eyes drooped with fatigue. At the moment she had been on her hands and knees meticulously scrubbing the dark hard wood flooring in her kitchen. She rose to her feet her knees aching and giving an audible creak as she stood.Elise made her way from the kitchen to the large foyer, wringing her hands as she walked. Her hand was on the doorknob, ready to open, when the the doorbell rang followed by three loud, insistent knocks.

“Great, could they be any louder?”thought Elise. No way Claire slept through all that noise. She was a light sleeper and fussy about going to bed on time; she was also vibrant, full of life and happy energy. Elise loved Claire with all of her heart and soul, but frankly she was a handful, one she did not want to deal with right then.

Elise turned the knob and swung the door open, one hand on her hip.Two men, probably in their early to mid twenties stood on the porch. They wore Identical white company t-shirts emblazoned with a red logo and black jeans paired with grey steel-toed boots. The man on the left was holding a large brown cardboard box that obscured his face. The man on the right gazed at Elise with evergreen eyes and a smile so happy it seemed obscene and unnatural.

“Morning ma’am.I’m Michael and this is Ben,”he said pointing to the man beside him."We’re here right on schedule. You are Mrs Emmerson I presume?”

Elise sighed, fixed Michael with a glare and said “Thank you for being on time. You can get started moving all the boxes into the house first and then when you’re finished with that, you can start moving the furniture in. I will tell you what pieces go in which rooms and where. Could you please be as quiet as possible for the next hour though? Ringing the doorbell and your ridiculously loud knocking have probably woken my daughter, but in the off chance she is still asleep I’d like her to stay that way for the next sixty minutes at the very least.”

“My apologies ma’am.We will get started right away,it shouldn’t take us more than a couple hours to move all the boxes;in my professional opinion you don’t have nearly as much stuff as most folks I have worked for.Oh and we will try to be as silent as possible but I can't guarantee it will be completely quiet. This isn’t a very silent job,you know.”

Ben shifted uncomfortably, the box he was holding evidently heavy.

Elise rolled her eyes, shook her head and told Michael she appreciated his discretion. She stood aside and let Ben and Michael in,who tracked dirt into the house with his boots, dirtying the floors she had worked so hard to clean. After Ben set the box down in the kitchen with a grunt, both men exited the house to go back to the truck.Elise shut the door softly and sat on the first step of a flight of stairs that led to the second level. She ran the back of her hand across her forehead wiping away sweat.Several minutes passed and she began to doze.Suddenly she was attacked from behind. Two fleshy limbs constricted around her chest and she panicked, letting out a blood-curdling scream.Giggling erupted from behind her and Claire squealed “Mom, it’s me!”

Visibly relieved, her heart rate returning to normal,Elise gently peeled Claire’s arms off her and turned to face her daughter.Claire was a beautiful child and with a small button nose and full pink lips equal parts Elise and Ryan. She also had her mothers long, pale blond hair and her fathers sea-foam green eyes. She was slightly plump and tall for her age.Currently she was dressed in a knee length gray nightgown with pink hearts and held a fluffy black stuffed cat she had dubbed “Ashy” in one hand.

“Claire, you scared me. What have we talked about? You know not to sneak up on me like that. It’s unsettling. Don’t do it again.”

“I’m sorry mommy,” pouted Claire.

“Come here.” Elise pulled Clair onto her lap and hugged her tightly, placing a kiss on her cheek. She squirmed and giggled, her limbs flailing wildly.

“You’re up awful early, sweetheart. Is there any chance of you going back to sleep for a while?”

Claire grinned widely, shaking her head back and forth. “Nope, no chance.”

Internally Elise groaned. Taking a deep breath to calm her annoyance she told Claire “How about you go upstairs and get dressed, then come downstairs for some breakfast? Then you can go play outside.”

“Ok mom.”
