-I can see what you’re doing here man.- took a sit in front of him, on the other side of the table, as he looked at his cellphone.
-What you talking about?-answered pretending surprise.
-Man, do not become an actor…you’re a terrible liar.-His friend ended writing some text and left the mobile in his pocket.
-Well, in fact I once thought about it, years ago…but I don’t like talking in public, you know? My face turns red and I feel so nervous and embarrassed.
-Oh shut up please! I was talking about her, do you think I’m blind?-pointed to his pocket, where lied the instrument he had used to talk to her.
-So what?
-So what?!-said outraged-so you know it’s not right.
-Why? I mean, she’s beautiful and she is kind of into me…I think…-smiled doubtfully.
-No man, you don’t get it. She’s got a boyfriend and she is your friend. Why would you think it is okay?-Got up from the chair and went back where he was standing before, near the wall. He leant against its surface, feeling tired of the conversation.-See, you could get laid and that would be awesome, I would be happy for you, but not like this, not this way. She would feel like shit afterwards. She would feel guilty.
-So what you suggesting?-Asked a bit angry. He got the chance of getting her but he couldn’t use it, there was no sense in his words.
-Talk with her. You guys get on really well, why don’t you take a moment and speak about what you guys are doing? Maybe she wants something and decides to break up…and go with you.
-By the way, why are you being such a dick? Why do you even care?-Bent towards, leaning his arms on the table. Now he was curious about the answer he could receive.
-Because it’s going to get bad. Now it’s all beautiful and happiness, you’re gonna get laid! And that’s great. But later you’ll be ashamed of what you did. You’ll regret it…
-So you like her too-he said, slowly, accusingly- You are jealous.
-No, I’m not. I’m your friend and if you like her I won’t touch her, I promise you. And she is my friend anyway. I just see her as a friend.-He relied his weight on his left shoulder rather than the right one, it was starting to hurt a bit.
-Oh, so I’m a bad friend after all…-starting to shout, however, his friend already got enough.
-No goddammit. Can you fucking listen to me once in your whole shitty life?-The other got away of the table and leant back to the chair while he walked towards him.-I’m happy that you are finally near of getting Christine, but she’s so innocent and has already a boyfriend. I’m just asking you, as a friend who worries about you, talk to her. I swear to god that if I catch you doing something with her one night…and she still has a boyfriend, I’ll kill you.
He stopped, giving his friend some time to think. He was talking about a serious relationship with her friend but he could only think about getting laid. Time would say if he wanted something more. So, trying to get rid of the uncomfortable situation, he did what he knew best, hiding, running away.
-I’ll do as I please. She’s flirting with me, not with you.-Sighted, tired of the way he was directing the discussion.
-Of course, I haven’t said the opposite. But that’s not my point. My point is…
-I don’t give a fuck about your point. If I want to fuck her, I will.-Smiled proudly.-now, if you don’t mind, I would like you to leave-what he feared most happened- or at least, change the conversation.-said finally.
-If you don’t want to listen to me, I’ll go. You’re my friend.-Posed his hand in his shoulder, friendly.-I just want the best for you. I’m trying to help you.-ended cordially.
However, he would not listen. Refused with a head’s movement and left the room, leaving him alone. Anger started to grow inside of him. But he didn’t try to stop him or change his mind. He wouldn’t go further. Took his jacket off the hanger and went through the door.
Jake did not even moved when the door shuttered down with noise, and his friend, his best friend, exited the building. He stared in front of the window looking at his own reflection. A few minutes took him before moving from his stared position. And only when he heard the noise and the shouts coming from the street.
Slowly but curiously, he opened the window and looked down the building. At first he just saw a few cars stopped and people running to the middle of the road. He could feel the rain drops lifting through his cheeks as the moon light gave brightness to the scene.
He took a closer look to what was in the middle of the road before going back inside. But a bad idea it was. The sight of his friend’s body, lifeless, changed his life from the very moment.
Suddenly forgot about Christine. He forgot about their discussion. His work. His holiday trip. He even forgot about his own breathing. And for a few moments, no air entered his lungs.
Motionless as a statue, he stared in the window till the point of nearly joining his friend down there, close to fall.
-“Alive”…”he is alive”.-words entered into his mind returning him to life.
Jake recovered from the shock, his ears recovered their ability to hear again and confirmed that his best friend was still alive.
He went back inside, putted on his shoes and ran downstairs. Five plants were covered in about a few seconds and the door clashed as he came out to the rescue of his beloved friend. Because despite all things they have discussed that night, he was still his best friend.
-Hey, be careful, give him space.-someone said as he approached.
-I’m his friend.-Wanted to tell her to shut the fuck up, but more important things were happening at the moment.
They opened to let him in and the situation was not really inspiring. “He’s alive”…Barely, he would have said. Mike fighting for his life with every breath was not a nice scene to watch from that distance. His face, nearly inexpressive, didn’t seem to care about the heavy rain drops falling from the cloudy sky.
-Hey…-whispered as their eyes made contact with each other’s.-….you’re dick…-Jake smiled with tears coming out, mixing with the water already wetting his skin.
-Don’t do that…I’m o…kay.-suffered intensively to free that last word.
-Yeah don’t worry, you’ll be fine.-Turned to the group of people around.-Have you called an ambulance?-One guy came in while saving his cell-phone in his pocket.
-They’re coming, in five minutes more less they’ll be here.-Fortunately for them, the hospital was located only a few kilometers from there.
-You hear that? Everything is gonna be fine, calm down.-with both hands over his shoulders he was tented to get him up. However it could be worse for his friend.
The minutes were passing by as he hold him desperately till the ambulance came by. They got off the vehicle and approached the group of people surrounding them.
Didn’t say much, took Mike inside the ambulance with all the care possible and asked if someone knew him. Jake stepped to the front and they allowed him to go with them.
-How is he?-asked once they got inside and the doors were closed.
-Well…for what I can see I would tell you he’s not in a good situation…The car got him pretty hard, he has some broken bones and I fear he also has internal bleeding. I’m not able to give a definitive analysis about his status, we’ll see when we arrive at the hospital. But don’t worry, we will do all we can.
-That’s why I’m afraid, that you’re going to do all you can…that means he’s fucked up.-Looked at his friend and he suddenly realized he could hear the conversation. His eyes reflected fear and desperation.
-I think I…I’m pretty much fucked.-hardly said.
-Yep…-answered the paramedic, agreeing with him.
-You know? You’re supposed to help, and that wasn’t really nice from you.-Jake was freaking out with that guy.
-I’m sorry, but he got hit by a car really hard, as I told you. Of course he is fucked, but we are going to repair you man, don’t you worry about it.-tried to solve his mistake.
-Jake…-he got close to hear better.-do what I told you before…don’t fuck it up.-and he closed his eyes. He didn’t you if he lost his consciousness or he was messing around with him, in order to avoid any kind of response. Anyway, he didn’t say anything. He remained silent, there, looking at his dying friend.
-You have to save him. Is this bad?-referring to his faint.
-Probably.-Jake opened his eyes in anger.-I mean, this is never good, he fainted…of course is bad.
-Well do something then.-shouted.
-Yeah man, I’m on it, take it easy.-leaned to the dying boy and started checking his constants, right away got his shirt out and touched his torso. Finally got away and sighted.
-What? What’s wrong?-he was afraid, really afraid of losing his friend.
-Everything, as I told you his body is a mess right now, he gotta get him to the hospital. I guess we are closer…
Fortunately that was the case. The vehicle suddenly stopped, not too hard, they didn’t want to make it worse. But the next minutes happened faster than expected. The personal was alerted of the situation and as soon they stopped by, they got Mike and took him inside.
Still recovering from the sudden stop, tried to catch up with all that people carrying his friend.
However, when they reached a door, someone got him by his shirt and made him stop.
-You cannot continue sir, this is a restricted area.-Moved away from him.
-It’s my friend, I’ll not leave him.
-Jake…-he heard a few meters away. It was Mike, calling him.
-I’ve to go with him.
-No, please, come with me and I will tell you when you can see him, but don’t go over there. That will only cause you trouble, trust me, I’ve seen it a lot of times.
He doubted a few seconds, thinking about pushing him away and run for his friend. But that wouldn’t help the situation much. He would slow down the doctors and he would be putted outside the building. So he finally decided to follow the man.
-Okay, but tell me as soon as you possible.
-Yeah, don’t worry about that. And now, if you please, follow me.-asked him with a pleasant smile.
They walked over a long corridor and arrived to an elevator. He leaded him to a small room with a few seats and a TV in the wall. Disappeared a few seconds and got back with some papers.
-Please, you would help us if you could fill this formulary. We would get us much information as possible from his wallet but we also need information about you, as I suppose you’re his emergency number right now, right?
-Yeah…I guess so.-took it, as well as the pen he offered him.
-Do you know how to contact his parents, girlfriend or important people?
He hadn’t think about that. He was clearly supposed to call his parents and tell them his son was dying at the hospital, a difficult task, but it was his duty. He could not forgive himself if Mike died without his parents by his side. He wasn’t sure about calling his friends, maybe too many people would not be advisable in that situation…he decided he would let that decision to his parents. As for girlfriend, Mike didn’t have one, so that was one less task for him.
-I’ll give them a call. Can you tell me how is my friend?-The man hesitated.
-He hasn’t been inside for too long, so we are not able to tell yet. I will come back when I get some news.
-Thank you, I appreciate it.
He smiled back as an answer and went out through the same door they had come a few minutes ago.
It was difficult to give the news to his parents, especially because they were sleeping and three calls were needed to get them up. But fortunately they didn’t ask many things, after knowing the name of the hospital they hanged up. So he guessed they were on their way.
Now he had time to relax and think about what was happening. His life, suddenly had changed due to his friend. He was aware of death, and many people around him had suffered it. However, they were mostly old people. Grandparents, some aunts and uncles, parent’s friends… but this time it was his best friend, the second closest person he had after his brother. He had his same age. He had an entire life in front of him but now it was all over. He had supposed they were safe from death, being that young. Always thinking death would come after thirty, forty or fifty years. However, there it was, stalking the body of a twenty-seven years old man. It was surely unpredictable.
And he realized that death was something present in everyone’s lives. No one was safe from it, no matter the age. Because when you’re a kid you are afraid of death, but you know it will come when you are old, so you just take it as a future problem. No way, that’s not how it works. All the days, people die, of every age and characteristics. And this was just one more case.
He filled the formulary and went to the closest reception to give it. A young woman took it, checked it and after thanking him, she started writing the information in the computer.
His duty was fulfilled and now he could only wait for any news.
