I Didn’t See This Coming

Have you ever had the crappiest day of your life? Well mine was just starting. I was laying in bed and I could see the bright light from my blinds. I was so comfortable in my queen sized bed that I felt like a queen even though I’m a guy. I checked my iPhone to see what time it was and I could literally feel my heart escape my body. It was eight o’clock and I only had five minutes before my school bus was going to show up at the end of my street.

I quickly ran into my restroom faster than Usain Bolt. I grabbed my toothpaste and my toothbrush and squeezed all of the paste onto my brush and began scrubbing at lightning speed. I went back into my room quickly while I was still brushing my teeth and grabbed some grey Nike shorts and a white shirt off the hangers in my closet. I went back into my bathroom and spat the paste out of my mouth and rinsed then I began to put my clothes on as quickly as possible. I went back into my room to grab my backpack, iPhone, and earbuds. I checked time and I only had two minutes left before my bus would come to the end of my street. I ran out of my room and into the hallway. My house is only one story and my room was near the front door of my house. As I ran up to my door and turned the handle I could hear my mom shout

“Don’t be late to that bus young man!” and I yelled back “Okay mom, bye!” then I went out the door.

I sprinted so fast out the door I began to realise all the things that I forgot for school. I forgot my damn shoes, socks, and a pencil, the most important item for school. I made it to my bus stop and I was really angry and I knew people were going to stare and make fun of me all damn day. My bus got right in front of me while I was thinking about how embarrassing it was going to be at school today.

Mr. Kevin my bus driver opened the bus door and said, “Hey Jeff, ready for this school year?”  “No, not really.” then went to the back of my bus.

My bus never had anyone on it but a few other people since I lived in a very excluded rich neighborhood. I sat down on a seat and pulled my iPhone out and plugged in my earphones and fell asleep. I woke fifteen minutes later to see my school entrance, and there was a new sign that read,

“Welcome back and welcome to new students to Richmond High!”

I gagged at that gross sign. My school is the worst in test scores, grades and was the best in dropout rates. I don’t know why any parent would make their kid go to this disgusting school full of racism, terrible people, and stupid people. As i was ranting about how terrible my school was in my head I did not realise that my bus was just about to pull into my school’s bus stop. The bus pulled up to the bus loop of our school and slowed then to where I can hear those terrible screeching noises from the brakes through my earbuds.

As the bus finally stopped, Mr. Kevin unbuckled from his seat and rose up and told everyone to wake up and get off the bus. I can hear groans, moans and murmurs of great depression since everyone knew that as soon as you get off the bus that you were going back to hell. I was the last person to get off the bus and I made a deep sigh of depression since I realised that I am back in hell. I began walking towards the office to see if they would lend me some socks and shoes. I could feel everyone’s eyes on the back of my head. I heard a lot of snickers and saw a lot of pointing from other students at me.

When I walked through the door to the entrance of my school’s office I was so glad and felt relieved. I walked towards the lady in the front desk and saw how young she looked compared to old hag from last year.

She looked really pretty and she began to smile at me and said, “Good morning sir, how can I help you?”

I smiled back and said, “I was wondering if you guys had any pair of socks and some shoes?” she replied and said.

“Oh let me check in our lost and found for you.” She got up from her seat and went into the back of the office.

While I was waiting I saw my friend Jake from last year walk into the office with this stupid grin of his. “Hey man, how’s it been?” I looked at him at with a smile and said, “ Yeah, I missed you too, bitch!” We both started laughing and I turned to see the pretty front desk lady came back with some black Nike shoes and some black socks. She handed them over to me and I walked out with them. Jake followed me out and we started to catch up with each other. “How was your summer?” “It was shitty but great, how was yours?” I asked. “Shitty as well” Jake said it with this stupid grin of his that always makes me laugh my ass off. We walked together for a while until I told him my first class was in a whole different building than his. We stopped and did our handshake to say bye. We promised to meet during lunch since we somehow managed to be in the same lunch period.

As I walked into my first period which was English I just knew that today was going to be very very boring. Most of the people in my class were from my classes from last year and I saw some new faces. Everyone was chatting and while I took my seat the bell had rang. I saw my teacher walk in and she began to write her name on the board. She wrote Mrs. Montgomery on the board with a red marker. She started to introduce herself for a good ten minutes about her life. Then she started to do roll call until someone came in. This pretty little blonde white girl came in and I thought she was just dead drop gorgeous. The teacher asked the girl, “What’s your name?” the girl walked up to her “It’s Emily Carhartt” she said in a toneless voice. As I watched her sit in an empty seat I began to stare at how pretty she was that I lost track of time.

I knew it was really weird to be staring at this girl but I knew no one was watching so who cares. Thirty minutes had passed and I decided to go to sleep and my class wouldn’t end for another ten minutes. I heard my teacher’s phone ring,  “Hello, yes this is Mrs. Montgomery. Okay I will make sure to send him down.” then I heard her put the phone down on the desk.

“Jeff Flowers please go to the office and make sure to bring your stuff with you.”

“Damn, already?” Some white kid had said it with this sly smile. As I walked by people were whispering and wondering why I was going to the office on the first day of school.

I thought that this was very strange that I was being sent to the office and I did not mind it since I was going to be able to exercise my legs. It took me five minutes to finally walk all the way to the office and I walked through the front door. I was greeted by the same pretty lady.

“Ummm, excuse me I was called down here for something? My name’s Jeff Flowers.”

“Oh, yes. Mr. Carter would like to see you in his office. Follow me to his office.” She got up from her chair and I began to follow her down the hallway of the office. I followed her to a door with the words principal and Mr. Carter. She opened the door for me and I saw a middle aged man who sitting in a chair and I saw a police officer. Why was there a police officer? What did I do this time?

“Please sit down Jeff. “ The lady then closed the door while walking out.

“Hello Jeff there is something Officer Parker needs to tell you.”

“Okay, what is it?” I asked in a concerning voice.

“Sorry Jeff, there’s not a better way to say this but your mother was murdered.” When I heard the officer say those words, I went frozen in place. TIme had stopped and I had no clue what to do next.
