One of the earliest trips to Miami that I can remember as a kid,, took place when I was about twelve.. Transportation was very accessible, with a bus running back and forth on Collins Avenue in the beach area. . The major shopping street, Lincoln Road, was just a ten minute ride from our hotel, and I will never forget my very first bus trip.

The bus was almost empty. I selected a window seat. The bus remained stationary, but nobody else was boarding. After about two minutes, the bus driver turned around, and with a angry voice yelled out “Sit where you’re supposed to sit, or get off my bus”.

I had no idea that he was talking to me. He repeated himself a second time, and I realized he was talking to me. There weren’t many people on the bus and I didn’t have a clue what he was talking about.

He twisted his body around in the driver's seat and pointed to a small sign that hung over the window, a seat or two ahead of me.

I stretched my neck and looked.

There was just one word on the sign  in large black letters..

‘Coloured ’, with an arrow underneath the word, pointing to the back of the bus.

The driver glared at me and motioned to the front area of the vehicle.

I moved up a few seats, and the bus was on it's way.
