Picture a large, empty room. Imagine that you are standing in the very center of this room, surrounded by chairs. The chairs are made of wood, probably some type of oak. They’re surrounding you, forming a circle. Each chair is facing you, as if you could sit on any chair at any given time. Now imagine that you are looking down at your toes. You start to think to yourself how much you hate your toes. The thought itself is random and has no significance. In this exercise, I want you to imagine that the chairs represent stress. Each chair represents a stressful moment in your life. Whether the moment is recent or old is not important, just as long as the memory was stressful. While you’re standing there you begin to feel a force in your palms. It begins as a small pressure in the center of your palms, and slowly progresses into what feels like a magnetic field. Now put your hands out in front of you, your palms facing the chairs. Imagine that this force allows you to move the chairs. Take a deep breath, and when you exhale, push all the chairs as hard as you can up against the wall. Feel better?
