Boxing is the best paid sport when it's a fight for the heavyweight crown. It reflects the need of violence and blood in human society. If not, ballet dancers would get paid as much as boxers for a single performance. Many great champions and rivalries built the legend of boxing: Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier being the biggest in the heavyweight category. Some controversies made boxing spicy: Muhammad Ali sent to jail and losing his titles for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, Mike Tyson sent to jail for raping a young woman in an hotel room, and Mike Tyson, again, biting the ear of his opponent, Evander Holyfield, during a fight...

Rocky is a boxer from Philadelphia. He was called "The Italian Stallion" and naturally fell in love with a girl with Italian background called Adrian. He was the local boxer who defied the heavyweight world champion, Apolo. It was David versus Goliath, the second biggest rivalry of the sport behind Ali versus Frazier. Some of his fiercest contenders include prestigious names like: Mr. T, Ivan Drago, and Tommy "The Machine" Gunn.

In professional sport at world champion level luck doesn't exist. Rocky agreed to tell us what it takes to be a heavyweight champion:

"Life's not about how hard of a hit you can give... it's about how many you can take, and still keep moving forward."

In his first encounter with Apolo, then the heavyweight champion, Rocky lacked experience and skills. However, he managed to last till the end of the fight, thanks to his resilience, and how many he could take.

"Going in one more round when you don't think you can – that's what makes all the difference in your life."

It made a big difference in his life as a professional boxer. Heavyweight fights last 12 rounds, but Rocky fights as if it lasts 13. When the 12th round ends, he is ready for one more round, until his trainer screams:

"This is over Rocky, this is over! Don't punch him or you'll be disqualified!"

"Nobody owes nobody nothin'. You owe yourself."

When you come from nowhere, and all depends on you, you end up saying such things. Self-made champions, going up the ladder from the bottom. This is the American Dream: to be given the opportunity to raise from poverty to become very successful, rich and famous. This is the "Real" American Dream; having a house, a car and a TV is only for average Americans who cannot make it really big, who cannot become a big star like Rocky.

"Until you start believing in yourself, you ain't gonna have a life."

Self-motivation and ambition was the fuel that helped Rocky to train like a dog during all the winter, and to fight like a dog too on the boxing ring. For Rocky it was a dog fight. But it was Mike Tyson who took it to the next level biting Holyfield's ear. It was the only time in the history of heavyweight that a world champion lost part of his ear during a fight, hopefully he didn't lose his title on this occasion.

When Rocky finally retired from professional boxing, he had a farewell party with all his fans. He made a memorable speech and received a standing ovation:

"Thank you. Thank you, One and all. Every once in a while a person comes along who defies the odds, who defies logic, and fulfills an incredible dream."

When he was training for his first professional fight against heavyweight world champion, Apolo, he started dating Adrian. She was obviously very worried for her new boyfriend. She even considered he could get killed by the best boxer in the world, Apolo. She tried to convince him to give up boxing:

"Why do you wanna fight?"

"Cause I can't sing or dance." Answered Rocky

And when the fight against Apolo finally came up, Apolo's trainer was sure about the outcome. It was not because Apolo was a much better and experienced boxer, it was for another reason:

"He doesn't know it's a damn show, he thinks it's a damn fight!"

For Apolo it was just a show, for Rocky just a fight. And Apolo did win the fight because he took it easy, meanwhile Rocky took it too seriously; it was really just a show. The audience will confirm it, they want to be entertained, and that's how they sold the event; the promoter sells a show, not a fight.

Before his first fight, Rocky's trainer, Mickey, warned him not to let his new girlfriend distract him from training. He told him:

"Woman weaken knees, women weaken legs!"

So, who said that behind a successful man there's always a woman. Maybe Mickey didn't believe in women, but Rocky became heavyweight champion with a woman on his side.

"So, goodnight Rocky. You are about the same age as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman. It is weird you never faced them on the boxing ring. Anyway, it doesn't matter as I'm sure you'd have beaten all of them, cause now you know it's a damn show, and these guys still think it's a damn fight."
