Chapter 1

I stayed inside after eating challah bread, fish, and roasted asparagus. I washed my face and said my prayers before going to bed. My mother attempted to sing a lullaby with her sore throat. Her eyes clenched in pain, so I told her to stop. When I was just about to shut my eyes, the radio turned on and it told us that New Nazis are going to get the Jewish people. “Mama? Will they get us?” I asked. She never answered me. “Alex! It will be ok. Just go to bed.” said my father. “Ok, goodnight.” I whisper. My eyes close and I fall asleep.

At midnight, I woke up to the sound of planes flying above me. I raced into Mother´s room. ¨Oh, Alexandra, stop your worrying. It will be ok. Just go back to bed.¨ I turned, and then I heard a knocking at the door. Father got up and I followed him to the door of our flat.

My name is Alex. I am a 17 year old girl. I have bleached blond hair and blue eyes. I live with my mama and papa.  Today is May 5th, 2017. I live in New York, USA. As you may of thought, I am an only child. My mama became sick when I was 9, so I had to grow up quicker than most kids. She still is sick. I have a boyfriend, Howard, who has dark brown hair and brown eyes, but his parents died, so he lives with us.

Knock-knock!  Knock-Knock The knocking had become more and more agitated. “I’m gonna have open it.” said Howard. “No!” I whisper. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you.” He smiled. He opened the door and there was a Nazi soldier. “I need your valuables.” he demanded. “Yes, sir.” Howard replied, handing him $250 and a bracelet.  “And, of course, I need the ladies necklace.” The  Nazi replied, pointing at Mother. “Here.” She handes him the necklace. “What about my necklace?” I ask. “Keep it. My gift to you for giving me all your valuables.” ¨Thank you, sir.¨

A quick glimpse at Mama, and I knew she was worried.  Howard patted Mama on her shoulder. Papa led her to the bedroom and came out. He grabbed our favorite book about America and read the entire night. ¨Papa? Can we move to America?¨ I glanced up and saw Papa was crying. ¨Papa? Papa! What is wrong?¨ He shook his head, but I knew better than that. ¨ The… the z?y Nazi´s… they say they take sick or weak first. Your mama is both.¨ I hugged Papa and went down the hall to Mama and Papa's room. I went to hop on the bed, but noticed something wrong with her. The sparkle was gone from her eyes. She frowned. I noticed almost immediately that she heard my conversation with Papa and Howard.

¨Oh, Mama! I wish we could move to America!¨ She gasped, shocked by my sudden outburst. Anger replaced the dull look in her face. “So, you don´t like our life here?” I shook my head no, almost afraid to speak. ¨You should be glad of your life here in New York. You are so ungrateful!¨ I turned ´round. I ran to my large bedroom and slammed the door.
