Intruder!

Sam and Ella were budgies. They had happily shared a cage together since they had come to live with Janine. Ella was a pale blue color with a predominantly white head while Sam made a much brighter picture, being bright green and yellow. Their plumage reflected their personalities. Ella was calm, not easily ruffled, while Sam was excitable to say the least. At the slightest excuse he would be off fluttering around the cage while Ella observed him from her perch.

Intruder! Intruder!” Ella sounded most upset, not like herself at all.

Sam fluttered over to see just what had brought about this totally uncharacteristic outburst. “Where, Ella? I don’t see anyone.”

Look....look behind you, S..Sam.”

Sam let his body hang forward, drop lower, so he was peering out from underneath himself. His eyes widened and his beak dropped open in shock. “It’s......it’s my....double! How dare it come in here and pretend to be me.”

It’s me it looks like, Sam, not you. Look!”

Oh no! There’s two of them!” Sam and Ella fluttered across to the other side of the cage, and cautiously peered back. They could just make out the heads of the other two budgies looking back at them. “This cannot be allowed, Ella. This cage is big enough for you and me but we will not share with any others!”

Oh, Sam, what can we do? Janine must have put them in here.”

Ella, we will fight! Together we will make those imposters know that they are not welcome. Are you with me?”

Ella ruffled up her feathers to make herself look bigger. “I’m with you, Sam!”

Let’s do it then!”

Sam and Ella fluttered swiftly across the cage, their beaks at the ready along with their feet. But the imposters were smart. Every time they were attacked they would swing away, disappear, only to reappear again. They looked just as ruffled and angry as Sam and Ella.

Sam flew forward and clashed with the imposter, this time hanging on for a moment longer. They both started falling and Sam let go quickly before they both hit the bottom of the cage. There was a clang as the imposter hit the base.

Where is he? Where has he gone?”

Ella bravely fluttered down to land next to the strange metal object that had just appeared. “It must be a door. A secret one that we’d not seen before. You’ve done it, Sam! You’ve seen the imposters off!”

Janine entered the room and walked over to the cage. “What’s the matter with you two, today? Don’t you like your new mirror?” She reached her hand back into the cage, picked up the strange piece of metal and hung it back up.

Sam was fluttering around by Janine, hoping for some extra bird seed to come his way. He didn’t notice but Ella did. “Sam......I hate to tell you....... but they’re back!”
