Eulogy.

This new lecturer is great! Kind of off-the-wall crazy with the tasks she sets us. The only problem is that sometimes I have no idea what she’s talking about, and just like everybody else in class I’m not prepared to make myself look stupid by asking.

"Your homework tonight is to write a eulogy,” she said, and we all, or most of us, wrote that dutifully down.

"What’s a eulogy?” I asked Carol at lunch.

"Search me! I’ll ask me Dad when he gets home later.”

Not a lot of help there then. “Graham,” I grab a hold of his arm as he’s passing. “This eulogy homework, what does it mean?”

"Jess, surely you’re not serious. You really don’t know?” Graham is smirking at me, a superior smile on his face that I’d so love to wipe off. “Hey, guys! Jess doesn’t even know what ‘eulogy’ means.”

Getting laughs at my expense, that’s Mister Popular’s way. And for all I know he doesn’t have a clue either. He certainly never gave me an answer.

Now, don’t get the wrong idea about me. I’m not a swot or a ‘high achiever’. I don’t get great grades and I’ve not got a high-flying future ahead of me, but I do like to write. Anything that’s to do with imagination rather than facts, figures. I don’t want to fail at the only thing I can excel at!

"Mitch, wait up!” I’m grasping at straws here. He is no more likely to know than I am, but at least he won’t be basking in superiority when I ask.

"Not got a clue, Jess. Sorry. Why ya gonna bother anyway? She’s new, she won’t push it if ya don’t bother.”

So no help there but then I wasn’t expecting it. So much for the friendship and support of students.

"Get yer head outta the clouds, Jess.” Megs might be sneering but at least she’s not after attention while she does so. “Go home an’ Google it! Simple. Better ‘n askin’ this bunch o’ losers!”

"Okay, great! Thanks, Megs.”

So that’s what I do. ‘Eulogy – a speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something highly, especially a tribute to someone who has just died.’

Now I know what I’m supposed to do. The only problem I’ve got now is who or what to write it on!
