I can't see it or hear it, but I can feel it. Every inch of my body tingled with the most uncomfortable tiny sensations that we were being watched, me and my best friend Isradora.

Currently we were in the middle of war. A civil war of types. It's hard to explain really. Mainly for the fact that it's so damn screwed up. One day all of us were living normal-ish happy lives being our normal boring selves when suddenly an inexplicable disease breaks out. Anyone infected...they turn into rabid beasts. Rabid beasts with rapid inhuman heart beats, beating outside the rib cage, cut out flesh, blood osing from the side of the body.

They devour human flesh , chewing on livers with blood oozing down their chins from their knife like teeth, biting, ripping, and tearing at their hearts and brain. They destroy you until there is nothing left and whatever remains there is are all jumbled up to look like somebody tossed their cookies.

Nobody knows what brought it about. Nobody knows the cause because everyone that tried to find out were either killed or infected. No. These people, if that's what you can even call them anymore, are not "zombies". However, the theory is that whatever disease this is, increases the anger and stress amount in one's system as well as their hunger to the point where regular fruits, vegetables, and meats no longer satisfy. The only thing that truly does is human meat. Thus, turning to canibalism.

What people don't realize is zombies don't eat anything but the brain. The part about this though that raises suspicions is that they have to be killed the same way: bullet to the brain. If anywhere else, they live.

After feeding, their hunger is temporarily satisfied. However, within a few hours, they are hungry all over again, but this time it's worse than the last. It is also said that eventually, no amount of meet can cure their appetites, so, they just die.

What we call these beats: ZC's. In other words, Zombie Canibal. Trust me, I didn't come up with the name.

These ZC's are destroying our species. In order to survive, people all over the world started grouping together, learning fighting strategies to fend of these beasts. Those who can't fight, work in the lab trying find solutions to the disease, or making medicines to help the sick and injured. Those who can fight but aren't that good, team up with those who can. Together they go out in search for food and other recourses. The PF's (pro-fighters)fight the ZC's and protect the BTF's.

BTF's (back up transmitter forces) are the ones who do the searching and are put in place of the PF's if taken down.

While this does sound like a complicated system, for us, it is rather officiant and works for the most part.

I, if you haven't already figured out, am PF(pro-fighter). Isradora, my best friend, is a BTF(backup transmitter force). However, unlike most people, I don't give a damn about what the system says. I will protect Isra with my life. There's no way I'll ever let her be killed, or worse, become one of them.

I looked over at Isradora, giving the look of warning. This was a look that she understood well from previous situations. One she recognized.

I pulled a small black hand held pistol from my back pocket where the holster resided, loading and cocking the trigger back. If a ZC was here, they're about to meet their match.

"Listen to me when I say this Isradora," I whispered to her quickly. "If worse comes to worse...your fast. I know this. You were on the track team for three years. So I want you to run. Run as fast as you can and as fast as your heart and lungs can handle. These things are strong and fast as hell, but if I hold them off long enough you can get a quick and easy escape. Base is four miles north. Got it?"

"Averline-" she started.

"Don't. Don't say anything. Not yet at least. Just promise me you'll do what I tell you to do for once in your life."

"That's not fair. Averline, if you get killed who is going to help to protect the others? We're losing out best men out here lately, they've been dropping off like flies and you know it. So why take the risk? If we run now we can both have a chance of making it out alive. "

"Some things are worth the risk. Besides, I'd rather have a chance of one of us definitely making it than a chance of both of us probably making it."

Because it's people like you that create our future. People like you with big hearts and dreams. You shape our future. You influence it. People like me where strictly created and set on this planet to protect people like you. That's our soul purpose. My thoughts consumed me.

Long ago Isradora had asked me what I believed in. I remember it clear as day. We were sitting in the green grass of our school's courtyard. My butt had  mud on it and the grass was still wet with collected due. Before, I told her that I didn't know. Now?

I believe in fighting. Fighting for love. Fighting for friendship. I believe in for fighting for what I believe in and I believe in freedom.

"A-Av-Averline! Behind you!" She warned me.

I whipped my body around so fast, to pointing my gun at the stranger.

Before us stood a boy. Not very young, but he wasn't very old either. A good estimation of age would be between 10-15z He had rusty brown hair that flopped messily over his right eye, sticking to multiple structures of his face that was drenched in perspiration. One eye was a blood red while the other was a sharp emerald green, he also had a lean, pale, figure that looked nothing short of deadly exhausted.

"J-Jessie?" We said in sync.

Jessie was a 14 year old boy who had joined up with our group a month ago. He was my brother, Tommy's, best friend. He had this ginormous crush on me and always did everything that he could to "win" me over. You'd think he'd have given up after a while of me saying know. Especially since he knows my motto, no feelings. Feelings equal pain. I refuse to allow myself to feel other than a small distant friendship.

Jessie had other plans in mind. He forced me to break that rule. He couldn't allow me to be alone. Every time I was grumpy or not my usual stern and bossy self, every time I was really quiet, he would do everything in his power to make me smile and was successful every time. Even through all of the death, the pain, the destruction, he never lost his goofy, boyish, smile.

He used to say to me, even if there is nobody left on this planet, you're the only one, or if you think that you've lost everything, there is at least five positive and happy things you can smile about. The maximum would be ten or twenty even. He would make me think of everything that was good in the world still and list them out loud.

Each time, my stubborn side refused, he would poke me and tickle me until I laughed out a reply.

Sometimes I would say because there is still birds chirping or because I'm actually saving people and helping to end this world.

When I was having a really down day and couldn't think of anything, he would make me list things about myself that I was proud of or liked.

Jessie was the reason that I aloud myself to still care about Isradora as my best friend. For me at the time, it didn't matter if we were close before all of this. I wanted to break down and cry. I wanted to give up and kill myself at one point. I was scared and depressed but then he showed me the light. He even introduced me to our leader Sebastian, my other and only close friend besides him and Isradora.

Jessie wasn't anything to me but my best friend. Yet at the same time, he was my light, my guardian angel that kept me from doing dumb and irrational things. My little angle that kept me safe, happy as one could be, and kept my temper away.

That all ended three weeks ago when he went missing. I thought that he was ready to go out into the field. Jessie had been trained well and with me watching...but I was wrong. That was the first time since this dumb war happened that I cried. Nobody knew because I cried alone. I cried in the corner of my room where Jessie would have normally sat with me, hugging me, telling me it would be okay.

I sat there alone doing nothing while my best friend was out here lost and suffering.

A boy who was and will always be stronger and more mature than me, dead inside.

Here he stood. Here he stood in front of us and I couldn't speak. I couldn't move. I couldn't do anything because the boy that was once my everything, that saved me from myself and overwhelming depression, stood here showing me the very reason why I never feel anything for anyone but a distant friendship. Jessie was gone. Jessie is gone.

Isradora made a move to greet the missing boy from our crazy and unbalanced lives, but I couldn't let her. I through my arm out stopping her as she crashed into it.

A look of surprise etched on both of their faces.

Maybe...he wasn't completely gone yet.

"What is this? Come on Averline, drop the tough act. This is Jessie we're talking about here. The boy you always make fun of because his name is spelt the girly way. You can't possibly be serious. He's turned your world upside down, helped you care again after loosing so much. Here you are treating him like he's..." she paused, realization dawning on her. "Sick. He's sick. Oh my God!" She finished.

Isradora's eyes flooded brokenly with tears. Her arm latched onto mine as the other reached out, dying to touch him. Not only was he a big part of my life, but a big part of hers as well.

Jessie's done a lot for the both of us, but Jessie isn't Jessie anymore.

"Isra, this isn't him anymore. The real Jessie is lost, dead, and won't ever come back from this. He's on their side now. Look, he's infected. Don't believe me, the signs of a PZC (pre-Zombie Canibal) is dry, scaly skin, one blood red eye and one the color of his original eye, hunger, anger, fear, paling of the skin, and perspiration. Lots and lots of perspiration. Jessie...he's turning ZC. Just look at him. He doesn't look anything like the Jessie we knew. There is nothing we can do anymore."

My voice had cracked slightly but I managed to regain my composure. This was a serious moment. There is a time for a person to want to break down and let everything out once in a while, but there is also a time where you have to stay strong and forget how you feel. Focus on the situation in front of you.

The same couldn't be said of her. She wasn't like me. Isradora was strong physically and mentally, however, emotionally, she was a child.

As she sank to her knees, I carefully pushed her back behind a tree. I didn't need her getting in the way of what i was about to do next.

"Av," Jessie spoke calmly, staring at me with tears in his eyes. I felt his pain, his fear, and what was left of his humanity all come forwards in a plate. The overwhelming urge to cry was too much for me to hold back so I allowed the tears to fall for a second time in forever. At the same time, I stayed strong and would not let my emotions cloud my thoughts and block my sense of direction.

I spoke clearly and calmly, my voice only slightly shaking. However, with me crying, and Jessie crying, it only made it harder on Isra.

"Do you understand what's happening to you?"

He nodded his head. "I do and I am so afraid, Av. For the first time since meeting you, Isra, and Sebastian, I am afraid."

The tears kept flowing more and more. All of my emotions poring off of me. As much as it hurt my pride to cry, I owed Jessie this much. The least I could do was show him how much I cared using the fluid that rarely ever sheds on my behalf.

"I know, bud. I know. And I really wish I could help you, but I can't. You're becoming one of them, a ZC. Please, forgive me for what I'm about to do. Jessie, I love you. You mean so much to us and everyone. This is the only way to keep you from suffering."

I tightened my fingers around the gun, including the one on the trigger. I was about to pull it but then he spoke.

"I-I love you too. But, I don't want to die."

"But...you can't die when you're already dead."

I pulled the trigger.

"NOOOOOO!" Isradoras' shrieks behind me could not be mistaken as she cried out for the loss of our dear friend.

Down his dead body dropped as did more of my heart, as did more of my soul.

Another life ruined.

Another innocent person gone.

The body count continues to grow as do the more of lost hopes.

"I love you...Jessie."
