Snake In The Grass

There’s a sibilant hiss,

A snake in the grass;

Stand dead still,

Let it pass.

Where it is,

Where it slides,

You cannot see

Just where it hides.

A sudden movement

To your right,

Your heart is frozen

With the fright.

There it is,

Up on your shoe!

Hope it does not

Notice you.

Should you take a chance,

Give a kick,

Paralysed now

You’re feeling sick.

It’s found your leg,

Curls it’s way round;

You hold your breath

Don’t make a sound.

And then it’s going,

Slithering away --

But wait awhile,

Check it’s okay.

Your fortune’s in,

A lucky miss;

It slides away

With a sibilant hiss.
