Chapter 1

Have you ever just had the feeling like life wasn’t going the way you wanted it to? Have you ever found yourself wondering what you did to deserve all the bad things that were happening to you? I can answer yes to both of those questions. My name is Madison Seals, and I am writing this to tell you about my life in a way that shares my testimony. I grew up with a family who believes in second chances, and I have always used that towards those I care about in my life. I am the type of person that would give someone countless amounts of chances if they wanted them because I believe in them. I was born in Amory, Mississippi, and I am 18 years old. I am a Senior at Hatley High School, and I grew up going to church every Sunday and Wednesday. I go to church at Grace Fellowship Baptist Church, and I am active in my Youth Group. I enjoy learning more about God everyday, and I am a strong believer in miracles. I have an incredible testimony that I believe is worth your time, and I want to share that with you. I grew up playing basketball and softball, and I continue that as a high school senior. My family and I stay on the water as much as we can. My parents are Tommy and Jennifer Taylor and Scott Seals. I have two sisters, Kayla Taylor and Whitleigh Seals, and I have two brothers, Codi Taylor and Jake Self. We are also hosting an exchange student at our house, and she is like my little sister. Her name is Rachele Elli, and she is from Italy. My brothers and sisters all played sports throughout high school. I am the “baby” in the house and extremely spoiled. My grandparents are Betty (Parham) Miller and the late Pete Miller and late Paul Ray Parham and Jackie and Ann Seales. My grandparents have always supported me, especially in sports. They make as many games as they can, and I could never repay them for the blessings they are to me.  Jake has two kids Alayah, and Raylen. I am so blessed to be their Aunt MaeMae. I have a loving family that I enjoy spending time with as much as I can. We have been on two cruises, and I am very fortunate to be able to experience those adventures with them. Thankful for all that I am blessed with, my family has been my back bone through the struggles that I have faced in my life.  But God is the most powerful.

My family has always supported me in my decisions, and they continue to hold me accountable for my wrongdoings especially my siblings.  My family is the most forgiving and the most understanding family that I have ever been around. We love to play cards, and we tend to get very serious doing so. We love to go camping and go to college games anytime we can. We enjoy our time together because as we get older, we realize that we all have busy lives and won’t always have this time spent together. My favorite things to do are paint, be creative, play sports, be on the river, write, be with my family and friends, read my Bible, pray, and just stay busy.

When I was in the 7th grade, a girl named Serra Pearson moved to Hatley from Nettleton. We were not the best of friends that year, but I did get to know her very well. We played ball together, and she worked so hard on and off the court. She was also in the band, and she was awesome at the drums. Serra and I started to get extremely close in the 9th grade. We were the only two freshmen that got to experience Varsity time in basketball. She loved to paint, praise God, play basketball and the drums, and be involved with her church. Almost at the end of our Freshmen year, Serra got really sick, and she wasn’t able to play basketball or participate in the band. She had a Rare Autoimmune Disease, but nothing stopped her from making other people happy and sharing God’s word. She always made people smile, but she eventually got bad enough that we didn’t think she would make it. It was very tough for someone who had always be there for me go be with the Lord. Serra would have been a senior this year at Hatley, and I can remember the day I found out that she went to be with God. I went to school that morning, and someone asked me if I was okay. I didn’t know that anything was wrong, and I replied to her saying that I was doing good. About two minutes later, my boyfriend walked up to me. We started talking and cutting up, and I noticed someone crying. I approached them, and I asked them if everything was okay. That’s when I found out about Serra passing away. I started crying to my boyfriend, Blake, and he comforted me. We were both upset, and I really wanted to go home. The whole day at school was silent. You could hear a pin drop. Serra was very strong in faith, and she always looked at a new day as an opportunity to share the Word of God. Serra did her mission on Earth, and she deserved to be in Heaven with no more pain. She fought until her last breath, and I am so blessed to be able to say that I knew Serra Pearson.

As I mentioned before, Rachele Elli is the exchange student that we are hosting. Rachele has become more like my best friend over the past several months. She is one of the very few that knows absolutely everything about me. She has accepted everything that is wrong with me, and she is very special to my family and to me. Some days are worse than others, and even on those days, she is still there for me to talk me through it all. Rachele is one of the sweetest people I know, and she would do anything for me and my family. I’m thankful for all the arguments we go through and her being the little sister I never had. I can’t thank her enough for showing me to smile no matter what I am going through.

When I was 6 years old, my PawPaw Ray passed away. I remember like it was yesterday when I found out about him passing away. My sister, Whitleigh, and I went to a birthday party with my dad. He told us that he needed to tell us something after the party. When we were headed back, Whitleigh asked him what he needed to tell us, and he told us that our PawPaw had passed away. He wanted us to have a good time at the party, and that’s why he didn’t tell us before. We were really upset, and all we thought about was being with our mom and Granny. My PawPaw Ray always called me Little Sissy. He was a man of God, and he went to church all the time. I remember when I was younger, I got sick at school, and he was the one to come pick me up that day. We went back to his house, and we had a good time, even though I didn’t feel good. On September 2, 2006, he went to be with God with no more suffering. He will always be my best friend even in Heaven.

My grandmother, Granny Betty, was married to my PawPaw Ray, and after he died, she was very upset for a while. She eventually married Pete Miller, and he made her very happy. They got married, and the summer going into my 9th grade year, he passed away due to cancer. He died on July 20, 2013. He loved our family, and he loved to watch me play ball. Even if we weren’t related to him by blood, that never stopped him from loving us any less. PawPaw Pete and PawPaw Ray are both enjoying their view in Heaven looking down on my family.

My Uncle Bubba passed away on September 11, 2015. He was an awesome man, and he loved spending time with his family. Sadly, he got really sick, and I can remember the last sentence I said to him and that was I LOVE YOU. I got home that night after a football game, and my mom called me and told me to bring her a jacket to my uncle’s house. Mom told me he wasn’t doing good. When I got there, people came to me and told me they were so sorry, but I had no idea what they were talking about. When I heard my mom crying, I knew right then what had happened. I ran straight to her and cried with her. I miss my Uncle Bubba everyday, but I am thankful for the loving person that he was because watching him love others inspired me in many ways.

I have had many things happen to me, good and bad. My family has been a strong support system through everything.

I grew up living in what others may call a “Broken Home”. My parents got divorced when I was at a very young age. Most people think that the kids that live in a broken home end up going crazy when they get out of the house. I can agree on some parts of that opinion. Whitleigh and I always had to go to my dad's every other weekend, and the older we got the harder it was to do so. When we were in junior high, we started playing school ball, and it was harder to go see my dad and his side of the family because of the busy schedule. Even on the holidays, we always had to plan ahead how everything was going to work. The advantage of being in a broken home is that I have a bigger family, which means there is more love. Honestly, I have caught myself thinking about what it would be like if my parents wouldn’t have split up.

I always loved getting more presents because I had to go to my mom’s side of the family and my dad’s. Most people think that kids in broken homes go crazy just because the kids have to travel house to house. I am a Child of God. I have only been to one “party” out of the eighteen years I have been alive, and my parents knew that I went because I asked for their permission to go. I have always went through life with faith. I prayed and I knew God had a plan for me. Some kids do chase after the negatives if they are in a broken home, but I have an awesome family that challenges me everyday to go after my dreams.

I have had several friends help me out with realizing who I am, even though I sometimes get down about life. Erin Williamson is a friend of mine that I have always looked up to. She always checks up on me, and I met her several years ago through one of my friends, Karlie Parker. Erin has a heart of gold, and I am blessed to know that she is always going to be there for me no matter what I am going through. She listens to me complain, and she doesn’t judge me by my past. I am thankful for Erin and what she means to me.

Icie Cockerham is another friend of mine that I look up to. She shines for God, and she knows that God has a purpose for her in her life. Icie plays basketball and softball, and she is in high school. I can remember how Icie and I became so close. My softball team and her softball team played against each other at Hatley. She goes to Hamilton, which is about half an hour away from Hatley. When we got done playing that night, I sent her a message and told her she played a good game. I told her I didn’t know who she was, but that if she ever needed anything I would be there for her. After we talked for a little while, we just decided that we could be the best of friends. We got along great, and she challenged me to be the best that I can be.

GraceAnne Kennedy is a friend of mine that I grew up with. We have always been there for each other, and I am extremely thankful for the person she is. GraceAnne is always the one to text me making sure that I am okay. Anything that I am going through, big or small, she is always making sure everything is okay. I look up to GraceAnne. She has a heart of gold, and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for her life.

Maggie Knight has became one of my closest friends in the past few months. She is literally one call away, and she always answers. She makes sure that I have everything I need. She knows what I’m going through without having to ask me. She is awesome, and I know that God has something big in store for her.

Molli Knight, Maggie’s twin sister, is another one of my friends that has been there for me lately. I am thankful for Molli and her heart. She is literally one of the realest people I know. I know Molli will be there for me if I ever need anything.

Jodi Minor and I grew up together as well, and she is one of my bestfriends. We have always the best of friends, and we did everything together. Jodi and I go way back. I remember when Jodi was my neighbor, and we always ran from one house to the next until we just got too tired. She has a heart full of smiles and happiness, and she never lets anyone get her down. She has been a backbone for me lately, and I am thankful for the love she shows me.

Josh Metcalf is one of my best friends that I grew up with. He and I were in Kindergarten together, and we were on the Homecoming Court in Elementary School. He follows his heart as well as God’s Will for Him. He knows what’s best for him, and I am thankful to know Josh. Josh has become more like my brother, and I know that I can always go to him.  Cody Dunigan and I also were in Kindergarten together. Cody has also been there for me lately, and I know I can tell him anything. Josh, Cody, and I have always been close friends. Even to this day, we talk to each other everyday. Cody loves to do what’s right, and he is always there for me when I am going through something tough. I know I can go to Josh and Cody for anything and everything.

In the sixth grade, Holden Clark came to Hatley. We have been good friends ever since. I am thankful for Holden for many things. He doesn’t care about what others think of him. He comes from a loving family, and he has a big heart. Holden’s mom, Gina Clark, has been an inspiration to me for a long time now. She has always been there for me, no matter what I was going through.

John Michael Woods is not only my cousin but also someone that I have came closer to during my senior year. He is always checking on me, and he is always open to talking to me about anything that I am going through. I am truly grateful for the new friends that I have become close to.

Jack Powell is someone else I have gotten closer to during my senior year. He is always there for me to listen to me complain, and he never judges me. I have known Jack for a very long time, but this year we have actually talked more and become really good friends.

Tucker Bourland is my best friend, and he is someone I get along with easier than anyone else. I look up to Tucker because he doesn’t let anyone bring him down. Every time Tucker and I are around each other, there is nothing but laughs. I enjoy being around Tucker because being able to laugh helps me get my mind off of anything that I am going through. I really appreciate that God placed Tucker in my life a long time ago. Even if me and Tucker don’t speak everyday, there’s never a dull moment with him when I’m around him.

A.J. Blaylock is a friend of mine that I have always been friends with. I have always gotten along with A.J., and he has always been there for me if I needed someone. He is someone that inspires me to do better in everything. He is always encouraging me to be the best that I can be.  Tucker and A.J. both have asked me about my book and how it was going, and I saw it as a sign to mention them in my book because they have always been true friends to me. I’m so thankful to have them as a big part of my life and journey.

Tucker has a little sister, Rylee, and she has been one of my greatest friends for a very long time now. Rylee gives me a hug every single day, and if we ever miss a day, we realize it and hug. It’s like a good luck charm to us. She is a follower of God, and she lives everyday like the Lord wants her to. She knows that Jesus has a plan for her, and she is willing to do whatever she is called to do in this life.

Sydney Elkin is someone I got really close with during my senior year, and she has been there for me through so much. Sydney and her boyfriend broke up at the beginning of the year, and I was there for her. She talked to me about everything, and I am thankful for the person she is. She motivates me to do the best I can everyday. I can’t thank Sydney enough for being one of my best friends, and I’m thankful for the memories we share together.

My A & P teacher, Mrs. Avery Adkins is someone that I go to whenever I am having trouble with anything. Mrs. Lydia Pearson is another person that I look to for anything. They were there for me the most when I was going through a major breakup during my senior year of high school. I am so thankful for them and what they mean to me.

I have had so many friends that have impacted my life in a positive way. I have lost friends and lost trust in so many people, but I know there are still true friends that are there for me no matter what I am going through.

Find Yourself.

  1. God placed several people in my life for reasons I may never know.  Who did he place in your life that you look to as your best friend(s)?

  1. Do you trust those people enough to tell them everything and not worry if they would go run their mouth? Have they earned your trust?

  1. I lost friends that I used to be very close to. Are there any friends in your life that you have lost?
