Shades of Blue

Blue – light, dark or in-between,

What does it mean to you?

Is it a color you really like

Or do you find it a sickening hue?

The blue of a sky on a summer’s day;

The blue of freezing cold lips,

The blue of waves in a gentle tide

Or of stormy seas swallowing ships.

When you are feeling sweltering

Blue can soothe the heat,

But the palest shade, the iciest,

Will burn you to defeat.

Blue birds will twitter sweetly,

Blueberries can taste so nice;

Blue is the color of all those veins

That with a knife you slice.

They say that when you’re feeling blue

You are oh, so very sad --

The rose I picked was colored blue;

Does that mean that I am mad?

A shard headed straight towards my heart,

A streak of the cruellest blue;

Or a warm, engulfing turquoise

That makes me think of you.

A color of contradictions,

Sometimes pleasant, always cool;

Blue, it seems, deserves respect

Or else it will just fool!
