Her name is Helena. Helena Stride. I have been watching her all her life. Nothing remains for her. However, who is she to complain? There are so many others in the same position as her, some even younger. So many others hiding from the darkness despite the fact that they deserve to be taken. A 17 year old girl has no right to be sad in this situation. She is ungrateful. Look, how stupid and incompetent she is. Does she want to die? Well, it seems she just might. So far, Helena has hidden successfully from the darkness. So far, she has kept it at bay. She peeks outside: grey sky, fog everywhere and no sign of life. The light has fled from this town. And hope? Its existence is barely even remembered. Helena knows she will be taken by the darkness, just like everyone else, just like her family. Helena isn’t special, no more than anyone else. She has been stuck in this darkness ridden world for what seems like an eternity now, lasting still. The world, gripped with terror as the darkness slams the off switches for the lights of lives.

BANG

Helena’s head snaps toward the sound. A door. From inside the house. Watch carefully now. Don’t let the door out of your sight.

BANG

Not that it would matter. It does what it wants and she knows this. She knows that as she watches the door, her life ticks by. Tick, Tock. Tick, Tock.

BANG

Your time is up Helena. The darkness is here. It’s here and you feel it. The darkness you know so intimately, it’s here. And it isn’t knocking at her door, wanting to be let in; it’s already inside, biding its time. Toying with her. Pathetic. I thought she would last longer but apparently, she let it in without even knowing. Just another human, just another insignificant life to be effortlessly snuffed out. Helena clutches tightly to her teddy, torn and stained. Her heart feels like it’s about to rip through her chest. Her eyes are glued to the crack underneath the door. Glued to the liquid shadows, the darkness, seeping through. She gathers her breath, pupils constricting.

It is too late now and Helena knows it. Her eyes are wide now, big and doe-like. She once had such a pure heart, completely untainted. However, the darkness thrives on the pure ones. And Helena was one of the purest. Therefore, her time is finally up. It was fun watching her but her death will be so much more entertaining to witness.

The scenery has shifted. White surrounds us. Pure, blinding white. At last, the darkness has made itself visible for its final game. Helena’s darkness, generated from her sadness, anger, envy, rage, guilt, wrath; a manifestation of her negativities combined into a writhing mass against the unpigmented surroundings. She observes it, waiting for it to make a move. Still as a statue, her breath comes out in puffs, anticipating any move it would make.
