WHEN YOU OPENED YOUR EYES

By

Donald Harry Roberts

I slept.

And then I slept a little longer.

I think the sun rose and set and rose again.

The thought in my mind grew stronger.

What's the point? Why should I wake

I am too old to care

I tossed and turned.

I buried my head under the pillow.

I was kept down by the cozy bugs,

Those invisibles that keep you half asleep

And half awake

And make you ask, What is the point?

And the kid in me

That refuses to grow up

Says hey old man listen up

There is still a point

If you don't close your mind

Get out of bed you old sod.

Then I stirred

And the cozies fled for their lives

Because I saw the point

I understood again

Like I do every morning

Like I will every morning to come.

And when I opened my eyes

I saw it there

Glimmering through the window

The curtains pulled back

The Sun shining bright

The point to everything

But I cannot tell you what it is

Because my point may not be yours

And your point cannot be mine Nor anyone else's

What's the point. What's your point

YOU WILL KNOW WHEN

YOU TRULY OPEN YOUR EYES
