Grasping

The edge of the river

It crumbles away,

I’m trying to balance,

My balance won’t stay.

The drop’s not so far

But this river, it’s deep

As it swallows me down

Forever to keep.

Then I’m spluttering up

And sinking back under

My equilibrium has been

Torn right asunder;

The current is strong,

The river keeps moving,

I’ll keep up the fight

But it’s clear that I’m losing.

My head under water,

I’m fast losing hope --

No branch overhanging,

No chance of a rope;

Then you reach downwards,

Clasp your hand on my arm,

You’re wanting to drag me

Away from this harm.

So I’ll struggle to turn

And your arm I will grasp,

For any hope of not drowning

You are my last.

The river moves swiftly,

You won’t let me go,

I’ll never stop grasping

And fighting the flow.

If the water should weaken

And you keep up that clasp,

Dripping and sodden

I’ll escape her grasp.
