The sun set as it always had.  The crickets chirped, same as every other balmy summer night.  Storms furiously growled off to the west.  The air conditioning was out so Chad slept in front of the window to catch the muggy breeze.  Two in the morning, still struggling to sleep, Chad decided to click on the TV.  The news was on with an overly excited financial expert explaining the ongoing market crash in the Middle East.  A new virus had swept the entirety of the Middle East region and it was wrecking the economy.  The entire region was bracing for a crash including Europe, Russia, and Asia.

Chad learned the new, rapidly spreading virus found its way into several countries in Europe and a couple of Asian countries.  A loud clap of thunder accompanied by a sudden burst of wind killed the power.  He would have to wait until morning to learn more.  As the storms rolled onto the east, he finally fell asleep to the steady, calming sound of the lingering rain.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Ten years ago, Chad was a successful stockbroker.  He served the wealthiest of clients and made a lot of money during the height of the stock market bubble.  He was successful and handsome.  He had jet-black hair, icy blue eyes, a strong set well-defined jaw and a constant five o’clock shadow that gave him a rugged look, which drove women crazy.  It had been easy for him to get the best clients.  Once he started celebrating his success with cocaine it all changed, then the stock market crashed and his clients fled in droves. He started partying all night, and continued to work all day, at first.  He spiraled out of control.  He would booze all night, snort line after line all day just to keep him going. His condominium went into foreclosure and sold at auction, he left the city for the middle of the country to start over.

His rugged looks had become ragged and his money disappeared.  He did finally sober up but now he just struggled along as a car salesman for a rinky-dink used car dealership in a Podunk town outside of Oklahoma City.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Shortly after five, the power came back on but the blaring static did not wake Chad until just after six.  He woke with a start, almost unsure of where he was.  Once he got his bearings about him, he grabbed for the remote and turned his cable box back on but encountered a black screen instead.  Since they did not have underground lines here yet, every time there was a powerful storm, the cable lines toppled.

Since, normally, Chad would be watching the morning’s financial news before work, and that was out of the question, he decided to tune in to some of the early morning talk radio.  He flipped it over to 710 AM, Your Morning With Jack and Diane was on.  The normally chipper voices of Jack and Diane were somber this morning as they discussed the implications of a complete government collapse in Saudi Arabia due to a virus that had been ravaging the country.

“Violence ensued as the national government of Saudi Arabia shut down last night.  It’s not clear right now why they shut the government down…” Diane paused. “…Okay, my producers clarified, the strain this outbreak is causing on financing for emergency and health services as well as all the extra man power needed  has caused the government to initiate a complete government shutdown, the cost of this disaster in Saudi Arabia has already surpassed the 10 trillion dollar mark.”

Chad shut off the radio and let that play over in his head.  Ten trillion dollars, he thought to himself, even with all the oil money that pretty much bankrupts them.  He glanced at the clock realizing he only had ten minutes to get to work.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

“You’ve got to be kidding me, Chad!”  Steve, Chad’s boss, screamed at him after Chad rather splendidly talked his customer out of buying a car.  Steve was a hefty man of three hundred fifty, completely bald on the top with a cowboy hat always on to cover his hairless head.  Steve was always red-faced but today he was turning a shade of purple, Chad had never seen him this mad.  “God dammit, you’ve sold zero, I repeat, zero cars this month and only one last month, you have two days to get some cars sold or you’re on your ass!”“Do you hear me?” Steve screamed at Chad.  Chad yelled back with a sarcastic undertone, “I hear you!  You’re going to have a heart attack, plus you can’t fire me I’m the only salesman left in this dump besides your old overweight ass.”“You got a customer out there Chad,” Steve noted loudly, “go sell a car, and don’t screw another one up.”

Chad slowly waddled his way to the sales lot imitating Steve’s struggling gait until he reached the customer.  “Hey, I’m Chad!  What can I send you home in today?”  The new customer’s eyes slowly turned toward Chad.  “I-I-I  n-n-n-eed some h-h-elp.  Call an ambulance.”  Chad looked into the guy’s eyes.  The whites were solid red.  Just a sliver of color was showing around his widened pupils.  Black streaks, like veins, traced the contours of the stranger’s jawline and down the front of his neck.  “Steve!  Call 911, get an ambulance here quick!”  Steve did not hear Chad screaming so he rushed to the door.  “Steve call the damn ambulance.  Somethings wrong out here.”  Steve leaned around the corner of his office, “What’d you do now Chad?  Kill someone to get out of making a sale?”  “Just call an ambulance and get out here, this guy needs some help.” Chad said as he ran back out to the lot to check on the sick man.

“Is there anything I can get you?”  Chad asked, “The ambulance is on its way.”“N-n-arghhh!”  Was all the stranger could get out.  Suddenly, the man started swinging at Chad in a convulsive manner.  He jumped back just out of his reach then tried to calm the guy down.  “Hey it’s alright, help will be here, just calm down until they get here.”  Opposite calming down, the man charged at Chad.  Instincts told him to turn and run to the office.  He flung the door open, slammed it shut behind him and locked it.  The door locked and the man outside collided, head first, into the glass.  His head shot through, but he was stuck at the shoulders.  Blood spewed from the man’s neck.  Seconds later Chad heard the ambulance coming down the street and saw it poke into view over the steep incline at the top of Main Street.  Steve came scrambling out of his office.  “What in the hell?”
