Look!

Can you see me looking through these bars at you. I am begging, pleading with you to just pick me, to chose me for your own. et the only crime I have committed is that of being born, of being the last of the litter, of being thrown out on the street.

I’m only young but already I am as big as many adult dogs. I have an appetite to match. Each time I heard voices approaching while I was with my brothers and sisters I would hide away. I did not want to become separated from them. Instead, they all left me and I remained, alone and, eventually, unwanted. They weren’t going to keep an extra mouth to feed, after all.

For a few days I struggled on the streets, raiding bins, staying out of sight. I became pretty good at hiding. The park was my downfall. I could not resist those wide open spaces where other dogs walked and played. I was lonely for some canine company and look where it got me. The Dog Pound!

So many people pass me each day. They pause and look, say ‘Isn’t he cute’. But then those other words follow; ‘too big’, ‘too expensive’, ‘we don’t have the space’, ‘we don’t have the time.’ I tried to look appealing, I really did, but my time is running out and I know it. It is almost impossible to have any hope at all any more.

All I want is someone to give me a chance; someone to love me and let me love them. I’ll be loyal, a faithful companion, always there to offer support. I won’t be picky about my food but will happily gobble up the cheapest brand or even make do with scraps.

Please, somebody, just give me a chance. That is all I’m asking for. I promise I’ll try and be the best dog ever. Don’t turn away and leave me to die!
