The day’d been cold; the night was colder still.

She walked along the wayward path until

She saw, far in the distance, her old town:

From whence she’d come, still in her wedding gown,

Clutching the arm of the man she used to love.

One winter morn, thinking her gods above

Had given her reprieve from fortune’s die –

A happy ending ‘til the day she died.

Naïveté had blinded her, but now

She comes back to her home and wonders how

She was so foolish to believe the lies,

Uprooting all her life and cutting ties

With everyone she knew and loved; she weeps

But tears that once flowed freely freeze on her cheeks.
