Mason never lived an extravagant life, he was just a poor boy in the biggest city of the planet Dessfar. He lived an illegal life but he'd live that one all over again rather than the chaotic one he was stuck in.

He could still clearly remember the last day he spent quite normally.

He sped up his slim mobil through the almost-empty road, still careful to not go beyond the speed limit, breaking the rules would be for later. He was headed for Cleft University, the most popular university in the whole planet, which Mason did not attend. The only reason he was there was to pick up his best friend, Louis, who loved to spend his whole day tiring his butt off with class lessons.

Mason passed the rather large gates of the university and found an empty parking space to land on. He slid the door of the mobil and stepped out into the cool air. Making his way through the university's grounds, he put up his hood and his hands in his pockets. The students wore flashy and up-to-date clothes and here he was with a brown hoodie and jeans. To study in Cleft meant being wealthy, which Louis and Mason was not, Louis' dad had a place with the higher-ups so they had enough money.

Louis' parents had tried  giving him as much money, and spoil him, and even let him study in an expensive university as they did with their sons. But Mason never accepted it, even though they were the closest thing he had to a family ever since he ran away from the orphanage he had grown up in. As he grew up, Mason decided he didn't really want Louis' family helping him his whole life.

His red-haired friend was soon easy to spot since he was one of the few who wore the school uniform and had a satchel. Also, he probably had the biggest group of girls following him. That was because Louis just happened to be both a genius and a handsome boy. Mason used to have girls trailing around him too, but that was before he quit the university.

Mason waved at Louis, gaining his attention. After a few minutes of pacifying the girls, Louis walked over to him. "You're early today." he said "Yeah, I have a race to catch." Mason explained, dragging Louis back to his mobil.

As they both clambered into the mobil's seats and started to pull away from the university. Mason noticed his friend looking like he was in a deep thought.

"Breaking up with Amanda, already?" Mason teased, Louis jolted and looked at him "No," he said "I was just thinking if I answered question 4a in the essays properly.". This earned him a playful scowl from his blonde-haired friend "Don't throw all that school shit at me now, bro.".

The friends laughed and talked all throughout the journey through the city. Mason admired the view outside his mobil. He could see the colorful and glassy buildings down there, Crawler mobils driving down the streets, people walking from shop to shop living their own ordinary lives. Mason loved the sky above too, every time he looked at the clouds he could see shapes and forms forming from them.

One simply looked like a tree, another the head of an elephant, one a sleeping man and one even looked like a giant's head looming over a mountain. For the hundredth time Mason thanked the Immortals that he had been born in Dessfar, though he wouldn't mind living in Albright.

He dropped down to the city level, and flew instead in an abandoned alley. This part of the city was quite, full of brick shops that sold all manners of things; from the latest gadgets to objects used in cults. Beggars slept here, bags of collected trash next to them, some held their bony arms for some change though the only passerbys were queer-looking fellows, most were even foreigners. Mason usually ran into folks from Eritai, come to buy ingredients for their potions or whatever they did.

They ran into one now, a man who wore a beaked mask and clutched a couple of herbs in his hand. Mason couldn't help but stare and the man stared back at him, golden eyes piercing him. "Didn't your mother ever tell you that staring is rude?" Louis remarked "Can't help it," he shrugged "Their just so strange with all their masks and clothes.", "Well, they do have their usefulness." said Louis.

Mason didn't mind his friend's strange choice of words. Just like Louis didn't mind his participating in illegal races. They were a strange pair and so everyone liked to point out, the two of them knew that but they didn't mind something about their being different made their friendship stronger.

Their mobil soon drove into a burst of sunlight. Crowds now surrounded them, folks from all over the Nine Worlds, girls dressed in sexy outfits while men showed off their racer mobils parked. Rock music blared from the speakers as some danced, bottles in their hands. Mason drove down the road as the crowd stared after his mobil, cheering, knowing that another race was about to start.

"Is this a new model?" Louis asked, "Yup, fresh from my garage." Mason answered, he never bought mobils only built them. He pulled over next to his opponent, the mobil next to him was slim too, multi-colored, it's roof rose higher than his and the glass crystal-looking. It didn't look like any mobil from the stores, homemade built too, and the material looked clearly foreign.

Louis clambered out of the mobil, joining the crowd, just as his opponent entered the foreign vehicle.

Mason sighed, his opponent was a girl same age as him and she was from Albright. You could tell from their unique appearance, this one had silver hair and violet eyes and faint curved lines that ran on the edges of her pale face to meet her rosy lips. The girl's wear was simple and she gave Mason a curt nod when she caught him staring. 'Pretty', he thought.

A cyborg girl, all metal, appeared in front of them, waving the flags. "Go!" she cried out, and Mason sped out instantly, the crowd cheering behind him.

This race was quicker than the others but whatever he did he couldn't throw off the Albright girl. They had been rounding around a corner, Mason could already see the finish line, the girl's mobil an inch away from his door. Another crowd awaited them, also cheering loudly.

That's when the ground exploded into fire, blowing Mason and his mobil twirling away from the path. The mobil's windows cracked as it was hit with flying cement and Mason bounced around his vehicle. Like a ball, the mobil rolled down the street smashing next to a brick building.

Mason could feel blood trickling down his face and pain conquering his whole body, the last thing he saw was an Empire plane crashing down on the next street. He then blacked out and since then, everything changed.
