I am the poison, coursing through your veins

The unnoticed balm, shielding you from the pain

You take for granted, my measure of use

And try, but fail, to call a truce

Between your warring heart and head

Fighting the loss of reason, you do so dread

Could it be denial that cools your bed, and blocks your heart from me instead?

Or perchance you simply fear to burn, for such a one, you should not yearn

To see, to touch, to taste, to please

You’d sooner beg upon your knees

To stop this growing bitter bruise, which spreads the more as you refuse; to open yourself to this great bane, and absolve your mind from its refrain

You long to join your heart and brain, to stop this flowing, breadth of pain

But say I, shall not restrain, my own black heart from this great flame

And for you alone, I’ll gladly burn

And crash, and fall, and love, and yearn

Until my poison dies away, in this cage you’ll always stay

Beneath my ever watchful eye, and never will I let you fly
