Tabby stared through the time loop. Gone. He was gone. Her best friend. Her brother like figure. Her almost brother. Her protector. He was gone. She new that one day this would happen. He had told her, but secretly deep down inside she hoped it wouldn’t happen. He needed to go back into his perfect world. To his real parents and his sister. In her hands was a book. At the last minute, before he ran through the loop, he pushed the book into her arms. His last words still rang in her ears. “Don’t forget me, don’t loose the book, and most importantly, remember I will come back.”

The hole in the air in front of her was slowly closing. Every second he seemed more and more like a distant memory. When it finally closed, Tabby was snapped out of her trance. Where was she? Where did she need to be? Then it all came to her like a crashing wave. She needed to run. Still holding the book she ran to the Safety. She locked herself in his room. Kevin’s room. The clock that he repared showed that it was 4:30. She had time to read the book. Her family had adopted Kevin into their Safety Home. Soon, she thought, soon they would come for the belongings. Then... Then what. He was still gone. She would get the clock. Her Zone, the blankets, curtains, rug, and clothes. Her Safety, the room. And what was left, her House. Tabby looked around. She saw his box. The box that he didn’t let anyone, even her, look inside.

Tabby turned to the book. She opened the first page. In bold letters, demanding her obedience, but kind like Kevin, she read.

Hi Tabby, don’t go farther in this book. Have my box. In it you will find all you need.  --Kevin

Almost at once a tapping came from the door.

“Tabby, sweetie, come it’s time for dinner. Don’t forget, since you were the closest to Kevin you get the first pick from his room.” Calla called out. Calla was Tabby’s mother. Tabby darted to the clock, but at the last second, she grabbed the box. “Tabby, you can only take one thing,” Calla sighed. Tabby looked at what was in her arms.

“Oh, this. Kevin gave this to me, before he left.” She said holding the box up. “Sort of like an early birthday present.” Tabby knew that she was lying, but she had to, to save the book.

On her own bed, in her own room, House #3972, Zone#199, Safety #542, Tabby opened the box. Inside was a case for the book, a pair of glasses, a gigantic quilt, and one picture. It was a younger version of Kevin, a woman, a man, and a girl Tabby’s age.
