The Guillotine

Word hard. Work long.

Play hard. Play long.

Keep running away.

It’s with you wherever you go. Watching, waiting.

Push it out of your thoughts, push it out of your mind.

The guillotine hangs over your neck, threatening to drop.

For now, maybe for a short time, maybe for a long time,

It simply hangs.

You chat to your friends, put your soul into your work,

You sit around and watch TV; you live life to the fullest,

 And the guillotine watches,

Is it a trick of the imagination, or did it just slip?

The guillotine waits; the guillotine is patient,

But less so with every passing second,

So drink hearty, chat merrily,

Ignore the lip-licking blade that’s staring down your neck,

Ignore, repress, forget,

Because there’s no way to stop its bite.
