I am usually referred to as an expert in my field; I flatly disagree with that notion. There is so much more for me to discover and study, before I can even think of declaring myself anything above a novice. My profession is the study of unusual creatures, I have traveled far and wide in these lands meeting as many of these creatures that I possibly can. I want to learn about them and their ways; it has been a few years now that I started my never-ending journey that will only end with my death. I have met many people on the same journey as me and we share our stories and information with one another. You could say that all of us are connected to each other through our travels. The last person of my caliber I met told me that he met an Arachne (Half-Human and Half-Spider), the stories that the Arachne shared with him; he shared with me. We spent the whole night exchanging stories and the next morning we said our goodbye’s and went our different ways. That was a week ago, and I wonder what he’s doing now.

I have been travelling through this forest since my last meeting with another traveler and I wonder if I am lost. Since I was exhausted I sat down and leaned against a tree, and got out my sketchbook and drew the forest around me. The forest was a deep green and rays of sunlight coming through the trees and hitting the ground all around me. After a while I Thought I heard something just off in the distance, a rather loud rustling sound; being as curious as I am, I got up to look around for the source.  After a few minutes I stumbled across a cave and the strange thing was that it almost looked hand made. It was very bizarre, so I cautiously walked towards the entrance to the cave not knowing what to expect. The second I got to the entrance I heard a voice.

“This is MY home intruder.” Said the strange voice, and I immediately took a few steps back without thinking.

“I am very sorry for disturbing you, my name is Kay. As you can see I am lost, could you show me the way to the nearest village?” I asked and there were a few moments of silence; then from the darkness.

“I can’t help you, Lost Traveler. However I do have a question for you. What are you doing in these parts in the first place?” the voice asked and then I realized that the voice was unmistakably female.

“If I can say you do have a wonderful voice, can you step out of the shadows so that I can see the rest of you? I would love to see the rest of your beauty.” Trying my best to compliment her so that I can get on her good side and as well see who it is I am talking to.

“Would it not be better to imagine, I can never live up to the image that you probably have in your head right now.” She said right back at me, so I just shrugged and told her that I would take the chance.

“Fine then, however you are most likely going to run away screaming when you see what I am.” After she said that, I heard her coming into the light and to my shock. She was actually a Lamia (Half-Human and Half-Snake); I was amazed at the sight of an actual Lamia right in front of me. I have heard stories of this Female only race, and have been curious about them and now I just happen to stumble across one living in a cave out in the middle of this forest.

“Why would I run away, I have always wanted to meet a Lamia. This has turned into a great day and might I say that you are quite beautiful; have some more confidence in yourself.” I just said without thinking, and the look on her face was utter shock. It was only then that I came to my senses and noticed that she actually wasn’t wearing any clothes, which makes sense when you think that she lives in the middle of nowhere and is part snake from the waist down.

“So you really don’t know the way to the nearest village then?” I asked trying to stay focused on the problem at hand.

“I do know a way to an abandon village not far from here if all you need is shelter from the coming rain.” She replied, and I looked up at the sky and noticed that there were a couple of dark clouds heading this way.

“If you don’t mind then follow me, I’ll show you the way there.” She said and I followed right behind her. I was fascinated by the way she moved just slithering down the hill. She looked back at me and I quickly adverted my gaze elsewhere. Since I didn’t want to risk being insensitive by staring I tried my best not to on our little walk.

“Is there anything you want to know about Lamia’s, if there is I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.” She said while looking at me with a smile that as I swear shined as bright as the sun. If it wasn’t for the fact that she part snake, I would have let her claim me hers if she wanted.

“Well yes, but first what is your name?” I asked.

“Valarie is my name.” she replied

“Wonderful name If I do say so myself.”

“Thank you, that’s nice to hear for once.”

“As for my questions, my first one is that if all Lamia’s are female then how do you reproduce?” I asked her.

“Well, we have a method kind of similar to Sirens, do you know about them?”

“Yes, I had a friend who went out to sea and fell victim to their song.” Suddenly remembering the day that news suddenly came to me that he died at sea, that is a painful memory to have; then again we all have those types of memories.

“Sorry to hear that, but we use our songs to lure a man to our home and mate with them all night long until the break of dawn. There have been cases where the man stays with them out of his own will; but that rarely happens.” She said, and I can actually see why a man would decide to stay now that I have met one myself.

“So you mate with humans?” I asked.

“Yes.” She replied with a short and simple answer.

“Are there any hardships being a Lamia?” I asked, and she was silent, so I guess that the answer is yes. We walked for a few more minutes as I noticed the clouds getting darker, it looked like it would start raining in like an hour; luckily it looked like the abandon village she was talking about was near. I’ll at least get some proper shelter for the night there.

“Do you mind if I join you for the night, I don’t think I will make it back to my den in time.” She asked me a strange question, and what can I say other than “yes”. We made our way to the village and we were looking for a house with a complete roof, a lot of the houses were in ruin. So this place must have been abandon for a long time. Valarie managed to find one with a still complete roof; we both went in and had a look around.

“Good thing is that there is enough wood to last us through the night, we are going to need it; me especially.” Valarie said and I looked at her with curious eyes.

“So you are sensitive to the cold then, is that just you or is that a thing for all Lamia’s?” I asked her and she responded with.

“That applies to all Lamia’s, since we are cold blooded.” I took out my notes and wrote that down before I forget it. The sky was getting darker outside and it looked like it was going to start raining any moment now. Valarie put some of the wood into the fireplace and I got out a match to light it. We both got in close to the fire to feel the warmth emanating from it. Then all of a sudden she moved in closer to me.

“I’m sorry; it is turning out to be a colder night than I thought it was going to be, so I am going to stay close to you to keep warm. Do you mind?” She asked me with a sincere look in her eyes.

“No, of course not” I said.

“Actually while we’re talking I just wanted to ask you a question. Did you lie back there when you called beautiful because you were afraid I would eat you?” she asked me a shocking question that I just couldn’t believe she said that to me.

“That is not the reason I said what I did, I said that because it is the truth (at least to me). Why would you suggest such a thing anyway?” I asked her in return, and she fell into silence. It was getting a bit tense for my liking and I had to say something, I thought that I should try complimenting her again and see what happens?

“Even though I haven’t seen a woman at least in a couple of months, I can say you are bewitchingly beautiful.” As soon as I said that I looked at her face to see what reaction I would get. She stiffens for moment and then went back to normal, which was kind of disappointing. I was hoping for more of a reaction than what I got.

“Seriously though, what happened to you?” I asked after a moment of silence.

“There is a reason this village is abandoned, long ago the people of this place seemed like a nice and gentle folk. So one day I came down from the mountains to greet them. But the second they say me, they were scared to death.  They attacked me while shouting awful insults, they even thought that I was going to eat their children, I ran away as fast as I could. I cried a good part of that night while treating my wounds. They were so scared of me that they left the village to relocate to another “safer” place. Since then I have done my best to avoid you humans until today when you came to my Den and tried to enter. I thought you would also run away the second you saw me, however you smiled at me instead and called me beautiful. That came as quite a surprise to me, and I thank you for what you said” after saying all of that, I was speechless, there was nothing I could add to that and no words of comfort I can give to her as well.

“While there is nothing I can really do for you, I can at least tell you that I am not the only one who would think that about you. There are so many of us that are now fascinated by beings like you and want to learn all we can about them.” I reached into my bag and got out a notebook full of stories I have collected over the years from fellow travelers and gave them to her to read through the stories about similar beings. She looked through them with wide-open eyes, most likely surprised to hear words like wonderful, awe-inspiring, and (of course) beautiful. She was in awe herself at the fact that so many people now wouldn’t see her as a monster anymore. That made her so happy that she was tearing up a bit. Unfortunately I was getting really tired, and before I knew it; I fell into blissful sleep.

The next thing I remembered was waking up in the morning and seeing her looking down at me. It turned out that I was sleeping on what was basically her lap. I didn’t realize how tired I was; but then again, waking up to her face is a blessing to me.

“Good morning, did you get any sleep last night?” I asked and she nodded her head.

“I’ve decided to give you something as a gift.” She said to me as I was getting up, and she got my attention.

“What is this gift you have in mind?”

“It is a symbol, one that represents friendship to all beings similar to me. However I don’t know how many races that are left that still use this symbol, but for those that do. This will show that you mean no harm to any of them.”

“That sounds very useful in my kind of work. So is this on a piece of paper, a necklace, what is it?” and she grabs a small knife that was on a nearby table and pokes it on one of her fingers, there was a twinge of pain on her face. But it was over in a second, she told me to roll up my sleeve and then I sat down on a nearby chair, she used her now bleeding figure to draw the symbol on my right shoulder. When it was done, I got up and walked outside noticing that it was a sunny day out, and Valarie came out right behind me.

“It is a beautiful day, isn’t it?” she said and I just nodded in agreement, I then remembered my bug is still inside so I went in and packed all my stuff back into it.

“You are leaving now?” Valarie asked me sincerely.

“I need to start moving on, there is still plenty to see in this world and I got to find it all.” I said while looking at her with a smile, and she smiled back at me.

“Before you go, there is something else that I want to give you.”

“What is that?” I was planning to ask, but before I knew it; her soft lips met mine. It was a surprise to say the least, but a good one. For that briefest of moments I was in pure bliss. When it was over, I was speechless for the next few seconds.

“Well… Thank you for that special gift. I will never forget it.” I said to the best of my abilities.

“And I will never forget you and your kindness brave traveler, may we have the joy of meeting again someday.” She said with her warm smile and I smiled back at her. I picked up my bag and started heading west, and I was thinking of a little song that I know and I started singing while on my way.

Oh all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

I forgot the other half, but not so far away I could hear her finishing it for me, and I didn’t realize that she would have a great singing voice too.

Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had
Are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had
Would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all

I don’t know why that song came to me in the first place, however it doesn’t matter. It is still a good song for when parting ways. So now that the sun is up in the sky shining bright, I know it will be another Beautiful day; just like yesterday.
