Take caution; take heed, before you proceed

Allow me to tell you just where this will lead

Hear me; turn back, don’t fall to the snare

Keep all your hearts, blind lovers, beware

Beyond the brink, I’ve driven, I’ve seen; once just before, I realized the dream

It beckoned me so, and quickly I fell; losing my head, I landed in hell

Therein I burned, bled through the flame; and soon I forgot, all else but the pain

Finally, last, the ashes remain—left in my heart, is nothing but shame

Shame for my folly, Shame for my trust

Shame for my yearning, Shame for my lust

Shame for my anguish, Shame for my fears

Shame for my breaking, Shame for my tears

Now I return, all but a shell, simply to warn you, simply to tell

You all of the ambush which soon you shall meet, if you don’t watch your unwieldy feet

Straight on it waits, blocking the gates; armored with love, let by cruel fates

If you run now, you can get away; if you turn back, at peace you will stay

Take just my word, and do not confirm

For go any further, and you too shall burn
