The Lawman

Thin tendrils of silver smoke curled around his face increasing in size with each heartbeat of the orange butt. The Thick leather duster and hat kept the icy winds from leaching the last ounce of heat from his body. The twin holsters at his sides were full and his bandoleer was lined with shells. With a finale puff of his cigar he stepped away from the saddle that sat upon thick silver metal. Dropping his cigar he pulled his bandanna up and kicked his spurs allowing them to spin freely showering sparks all around. Lifting his two revolvers from their holsters he turned around and leaned back falling off the edge of the spaceship. The wind whipped against his face, thin glass optics slid from the leather hat and covered his eyes. The world was barren. Thick snow covered every surface. No being would want to live in such an inhospitable planet, unless they were trying not to be found. The surface was coming closer with ever second. About a hundred feet before he collided with it’s surface he kicked his boots sparks from the colliding metal ignited the gas that was flowing from his heals. With a fury of fire he slowed his fall and descended onto the icy surface leaving a mixture of steam and smoke all around. Small red dots began to appear on his screen. “well I guess I have and audience” he called to the snow and ice. “take me to him and no one with get hurt” he continued. Only the bitter reply of the whipping wind was heard. “well I guess we have to do this the hard way”. Leveling his peacekeepers at the first two dots he pulled the trigger and all hell broke loose. Small white gremlins with feathery wings and black spines came flying from the snow firing short blasts from plasma launchers. The figure with the shinning badge of a bygone era twisted to and fro firing and dodging as hot plasma flew inches from his form. The flying menaces were dropping with each crack from his gun. They fell from the sky, diving headfirst into the ground below. Crimson blood stained the snow forming an abstract painting on the thick white canvas. After the last had fallen and the smoke had cleared the figure emptied the spent casings and loaded his guns then placed them into their holsters. A large red dot began to form on his screen. “so now you will show yourself after all you minions are dead” the man with the golden star spoke. A lumbering being that stood almost as tall as a building with rough green skin and four large red eyes evenly spread across a face that was half covered in greasy black hair that matted to his head. shambled into the small battle torn clearing. With a harrowing voice he spoke saying “you are going to regret coming here bounty hunter” and with that he heaved two enormous weapons into the direction of the bounty hunter. The bounty hunter replied “they always say that” pulling his hat down reached behind his back retrieving a long double barrel shotgun from its holster. Loading it with a black shell and a red shell he clicked the two pieces together and looked up. The behemoth began his fiery assault bellowing thick greasy flames that engulfed the leather clad figure. When the fire had cleared he looked down to see the bounty hunter standing there with a now lit cigar in hand. “thanks” he called then lifted his gun firing a shot into each of the being’s knees. The bullets connected and immediately pulled together binding his legs. The colossal figure fell with a thundering crash. Ejecting the spent shells and returning the shotgun to it’s place he heaved a large black rope from his hip and lassoed the head of the being. Then he let out a long whistle. Shortly after a small spaceship with a painting of a horse and the words “The Steed” painted in white across the side arrived. Attaching the rope to the ship the man with the sheriff badge straddled the ship and spurred it bringing the engine to life.

All the members of the council had taken their seats. Whispers slipped from person to person. “could he do it” “why did we send him to die” “was he single” the golden room had only one entrance a large door that could fit almost an entire class A spaceship. The whispers were suddenly silenced as a small ship with a massive object in tow was heading in their direction. “had he done it”

The Steed bellowed fire as it dragged its load into the golden room. Just as it hit the center the engine was stopped and the bounty hunter stepped off and untied the rope from his query. The room was speechless all except for one person at the back of the room. With a shrill voice he spoke saying “way to go space cowboy”. The bounty hunter looked up in rage “they call me the Lawman” he replied. “well space cowboy here is your payment as promised.” The voice returned. The Lawman took the money with a begrudging look. Then walked back to his ship. He straddled the ship only hesitating for a moment to draw his gun in a flash of movement and execute the man from the back of the room. Dropping the spent casing and looked around to the crowd saying “The name is the Lawman” with those final words he spurred his ship and flew into the star speckled horizon.
