I once beheld a bird that fell from the sky

Its wings were both chained, so it could not fly

This bird seemed so strong, beautiful and pure; its eyes were not blind, but fearlessly clear

I watched as it wandered into my cage, forsaking a storm of chaotic rage

I loved as it sang and danced just for me, and wished that its wings should never be free

But fie on my heart! I was all too cruel

This bird could not fly, but just for a fool

Iit needed the wind, the sun, and the rain

And I possessed nothing, save patience and pain

It was then no wonder, this bird grew so sad; and soon swore my cage had driven him mad

I watched as it weakened the more with each day, and looked on its eyes so filled with dismay

No longer the bird, would dance or would sing; but only would sigh, and only would dream

For freedom it craved, with all of its soul; for my dreary cage, had last took its toll

As days drifted by, I knew it’d soon die

If I but continued to rob it of sky

But fie on my heart! I just could not bear, the thought of being left alone in despair

The fear froze my hand and tore me apart, until last I saw, my light in the dark

It was oh so sick and desperately frail; this bird I’d condemned and sealed within hell

I wept tears of blood, and rendered a blade; and then last I broke, each burdensome chain

The next morn I woke, to find the bird free; and spreading its wings, it flew far from me

The only thing left now here is a cage, home to a beast of misery’s rage

I’ll never forget that beautiful bird, who once I beheld, and last cry I heard
