Maria stuffed her books into her bookbag as soon as she heard the school bell ring, it was Friday and she couldn’t wait to enjoy her weekend. She had been itching to watch Fuller House but had no time because this week because a lot of the teachers were assigning homework for each day. She waiting for her friend Alicia to pack her bag, she had everything from her backpack spread out on the table. Maria recommended organizing her bookbag like she always did but Alicia rolled her eyes and crammed everything into her bookbag. Alicia picked up her violin’s large case then they walked out into the hallway where their classmates were playing around and dancing, singing “It’s Friday”. Both the girls covered their ears, “That song got stuck in my head and I couldn’t stop singing it for a whole week or so.” Alicia said, Maria sucked her teeth, and said “More like a month”. The girls went to their lockers and got their jackets, then left out of the building.

As the girls walked down the entrance steps Maria’s boyfriend, Henry was pulling up in front of the building, he rolled down the window, laughed and asked “you ladies need a ride?” Alicia shoved her violin into the backseat then they both got into the car and sighed in relief, Maria turned the radio up. Alicia leaned forward and reached for the radio knob, Maria grabbed her hand smiled and told her that if she wanted to change the station she’d have to fight her first. Maria looked out the window then began to doze off, just as she was getting to sleep Alicia grabbed her and yelled “wake up!” Maria screamed and playfully hit Alicia, they had arrived at Alicia’s house, she got out and told Maria to text her when she got home, then said bye to Henry. Henry asked Maria if he could come over but she told him her parents were going to be home early tonight, Henry pulled over to the curb a block away from Maria’s house so her parents wouldn’t see her get out of his car. They kissed for a few moments then Maria put her bookbag strap over her shoulder and reached for the door, “I’ll call you later tonight”, Henry said. She put the other strap over her shoulder then began walking to her house.  She took her phone out to text Alicia that she was home, but before she could send the text Mrs. Baddon called her phone and asked if she could babysit tonight, they offered extra because it was a Friday night, and told her that the kids missed her and kept asking about her. She asked what time and they told her 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm, she agreed to babysit and said that she’d be there by 9. It was 8:27 she had a little under half an hour to shower and change her clothes before she left to babysit. She sent the previous text that got interrupted to Alicia then followed up with “babysitting for the Baddon’s tonight, wish me luck..” The Baddon’s had two boys, they were the best kids she had taken care of in the 3 years that she had been babysitting for money.

Maria saw her parents car parked out front and sighed in relief because they home early enough to give her ride to the Baddon’s house, walked in the house and yelled “mom and dad I’m home!”. Maria took her bag upstairs to her room then went to shower, she sat the clock outside of the shower then turned the water on. Once the hot water hit her body she zoned out, and the next time she looked at the clock she saw “9:25”, she panicked and cut the water off, she dried off and got dressed then asked her dad if he could drive her to the Baddon’s house because she was babysitting tonight. He sighed, grabbed his keys, then went outside to start the car up.  She went back to her room and grabbed her book bag, she ran down the stairs and outside to where her dad was waiting in the car. He jokingly tapped the gas as if he was going to leave her, Maria yelled “stop!” then ran to the passenger door and got in. “That’s not funny!” she said with a frown, as her dad laughed at her. “So was this a last minute thing or-? Her dad asked as he pulled out of the driveway. “Yeah, I planned on laying on my bed doing nothing until Sunday” Maria said in a disappointed tone.  “You just can’t say no huh?”, her father said with a grin on his face. “How was school today?” he asked. “It was the typical school day, boring lessons and me struggling to stay awake during each class.” They both laughed, “So how’s Henry? Do you still talk to him?” her dad asked, Maria’s stomach turned, “I stopped talking to Henry a long time ago, jeez dad!” He made a face at her that communicated he didn’t buy that lie for a second.

Her dad pulled over in front of the Baddon’s house, it was strange house that had different colored bricks and grass climbing either side of it. “Let them know again that I’ll cut that for them if they need me to” said her dad. “Dad I think they’re fine with the weird grass growing on their house, I’m not going to ask them a fourth time”, said Maria leaned in for a kiss on the cheek. Maria got out and walked to their front door she checked her phone, it was 9:30 exactly. As she reached for the doorbell Mr. Baddon opened the door, beside him was Mrs. Baddon and their two boys, Ren and Rai. They all simultaneously waved at Maria’s dad, and welcomed Maria in, “that was weird.” the father thought to himself. Mr. Baddon held up his pointer finger to Maria’s dad for him to wait. Maria walked in and hung her coat on the coat rack, Mr. and Mrs. Baddon told her that they’d be going out for dinner then to the movie theater. They kissed their children and said that they’d be back in a few hours. They gave Maria a smile then walked out and shut the door behind them. Maria saw her dad still waiting but thought nothing of it, she locked the door behind the Baddons and turned towards Ren and Rai, but they were already sprinting up the stairs yelling “you’re it!”.

They loved to play hide and seek but it was over quick because they always chose the same hiding spots, under their beds. She pretended she couldn’t find them for a few minutes instead of going straight to them so wouldn’t think she was “cheating”. She crept up the steps as they giggled to themselves in their rooms. “You guys are the best at hide and seek!” She said as she walked on her tippy toes towards their room, she stuck her head into their room’s doorway then yelled “I found you guys!” She was surprised, they actually hadn’t hid under their beds for the first time, she heard muffled chuckles coming from the closet, “Very clever Ren and Rai”. She walked over to the closet and pulled the door back, the chuckling stopped, “found you g-” her voice drifted off as she looked at the trash bags with chuckling children's voices coming from them. As she neared the bags the voices got quieter, once she was right in front of them the voices went silent. She parted the opening of the first bag and jumped back in horror, Ren’s corpse fell over and his head rolled from the bag, his eyes were gouged out and now the faint chuckling had begun again it was coming from the severed head.

She held her mouth trying not to vomit, she ran down the steps towards the front door. The lights shut out as she reached for the doorknob, she twisted and pulled but the door didn’t budge. She began to feel a the palm of her hand burn as she gripped the doorknob, she snatched her hand away and looked at it. Her palm had a pentagram burnt into it, the burning sensation didn’t stop, she ran to the kitchen run cold water on it. She turned the knob to the right, she heard the pipes struggle to push water out, then she turned the knob back to the left then turned it to the right again and steaming hot water shot out and burned her hand. She screamed and turned the water off then began to cry. She reached in her pocket with her good hand and took out her cell phone, no signal. She looked around the kitchen for something she could use to break a window, she found a meat mallet in one of the drawers. She took it from the drawer then immediately banged it against any window she saw, none of them made noise, or got a scratch nor a dent, she dropped it and sighed in disbelief. She heard a noise coming from the front room, a thud sound coming down the stairs, she put her hand over her mouth to quiet her breathing then eased her way towards the kitchen door. She couldn’t stop thinking about Ren’s severed head, she vomited in her mouth just thinking about it, she instinctively swallowed it and silently gagged. She listened for the thudding but now all she could hear was a rolling sound, which was getting closer to the kitchen. She felt something hit against her foot, she looked down and saw that it was Rai’s head, “I found you!” the head shouted. Maria screamed and kicked the head away then ran out the kitchen door, she tripped over something on the way out and hit the floor hard. She was dazed, she heard the rolling sound again, Ren’s head was now rolling across the floor toward her, “We win this round! Our friend would like to play too!” Maria got up and ran for the basement door, unsure of the things she had saw being real or an awful dream. She turned the knob and yanked the door open, then locked the door behind as she closed it. “Tell him we said hello!” said Ren and Rai as they rolled toward the basement door.

Maria looked around the basement for a light, she could hardly see anything and the window wasn’t of much use unless a car passed by. She used her cell phone instead, as her eyes scanned the basement she heard a car door slam. She ran to the window and banged on it screaming for help, but of course it didn’t attract anyone’s attention, except for the heads of Ren and Rai upstairs. They were now rolling back and forth banging against the door yelling “Don’t make so much noise they’ll get angry!” She ignored them and continued pounding on the window. She heard a tired groan come from the corner of the basement behind her. She gasped and shined her phone light in the direction the groan came from, she didn’t see anything, then she turned back to the window. Went to bang on the window again but something grabbed her wrist before she could hit the window again, she turned and saw a man dressed in light blue medical scrubs he was mumbling words and staring at her. Before she could yank away he yanked her arm and bent it out of shape, she screamed as she tried to pull away and fight him. She shook in horror as she listened to the bones in her arm crunch and crack. She let out a loud scream, and fell to the ground. She could hear the kids’ heads upstairs laughing at her. She balled up in the corner and screamed, “HELP! SOMEONE HELP ME! PLEASE SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF HERE!” Then all of a sudden, the pain was gone. She awoke to a room of nurses with worried looks on their faces, one of them had needles and was slowly walking towards her saying, “Relax everything is going to be alright”. The nurse smiled and took her arm with one hand then stuck the needle into Maria’s arm.

When Maria woke up again she saw Henry and Alicia at her bed side, Henry had Maria’s hand in his and Alicia was wiping tears from her face. “How ya feeling?” Henry said as he took her hand into both hands. “W-Where am I?” Maria said in a dazed voice. Henry looked at Alicia, then back at Maria, “You’re..in a mental institution Maria.” “How long have I been here?..I want to go home!” Maria shouted. Henry put his head down holding back tears, “Maria they aren’t going to let you out, you killed Ren and Rai  the police found you playing with their corpses.” Alicia got up and left the room, “N-no I didn’t do that! Those kids are evil! I didn’t kill them! They’re evil!” Maria screamed. Alicia came back in and put her hand on Henry’s shoulder, “We’ll be back to see you tomorrow Maria..” Alicia said. “NO! Do not leave me here, p-please!” Maria exclaimed. Alicia shook her head then walked back out, “I’m sorry Maria..” Henry said as he got up from his chair, he kissed her on the cheek then walked out. A nurse came in soon after and asked Maria how she was feeling. “I’m scared, I want to go home, how long have I been here?” The nurse took her hand and sighed, “Maria...Today makes the 3rd year you’ve been with us, we go through this every morning, do you remember my name yet?” she said. Maria started to sob then pulled away and turned over to face the wall instead of the nurse. “I’ll go now Maria, I’ll be back in a little while.” The nurse said, she went back to check in with the doctors, “Maria still isn’t showing any progress, I don’t think she’s going to recover”. She said to the doctors, “Well duh, we knew that after the first week nurse, we’re still trying to figure out why you waste your time trying to help her remember anything after what she did that night”, One of the doctors said with a bit of a chuckle at the end.

Henry and Alicia decided to give the Baddon’s a call to see how they were doing. Alicia called Mrs. Baddon to see if they could stop past, when she picked up the phone Alicia heard Mrs. Baddon shushing someone, “H-hello! Alicia how are you?” Mrs. Baddon said, “Hi Mrs. Baddon how are you and Mr. Baddon doing?” she asked. “We’re-” she was interrupted by the sound of a child’s voice, she made out that the child was asking to go outside. “Mrs. Baddon is this a bad time?” she asked. “Yes! I’ll call you back another time!” Mrs. Baddon said before immediately ending the call.

Alicia told Henry about what she had heard and how strange Mrs. Baddon had been acting, they decided to drive past the house. They saw children in the upstairs windows staring at them as they went by. Henry spun the car around after a moment of shock. He parked on the sidewalk almost on their lawn. He and Alicia got out and ran through the grass up to the door, they rung the doorbell anxiously and repeatedly until someone answered the door. Rai opened the door and told them to come in. When they got in Ren was on the staircase, “let’s play hide and seek!” Ren called out as he ran up the stairs, Rai followed. Alicia and Henry looked at each other not sure what to make of what was happening. “Henry we should-” the door closed behind them, Henry grabbed the doorknob and twisted but it wouldn’t budge, he felt a tingling sensation that soon turned into a burning sensation.

He looked at his hand then up towards Alicia, but she wasn’t there. “Alicia!?” he called out, Alicia looked at her palm then screamed, she went to show Henry but he was no longer there. Henry heard a soothing voice calling his name, followed by a sweet smell, he followed it and saw a shirt with a tie hanging from the ceiling, as he walked toward it the voice grew louder and the smell intensified. He looked around the room for something to help him reach. He couldn’t stop himself, he found a brown stool and pulled moved it beneath the shirt then put it shirt on and tightened the tie around his neck. When he went to step down he snapped out of the daze.

Alicia was greeted by the sound of beautiful Stradivarius chords. She had wanted one ever since she was introduced to it during one of her violin lessons. Her mind cleared, she felt like she was floating towards the sound of the chords, the vibrations filled her body with joy. Once she reached the room the chords were coming from she saw it was her violin lesson room, but no one was there, it was just her and a gorgeous, shiny Stradivarius 1738 circa 1900. She stepped to the rhythm of the chords, every step brought her closer to happiness. She saw an arco placed on a small brown stool. She picked it up and walked toward the Stradivarius, a smile now spreading across her face. She took it and drug it across the strings, she felt her hands begin to go numb, she pulled the arco back across the strings then fell to her knees. Later that day neighbors reported that they witnessed Henry and Alicia break into the house, but none of them saw them come back out. The police carefully searched the house looking for signs of Henry and Alicia. They found Henry in the basement hanging from the ceiling. They found Maria in the kitchen, she had slit her wrists. The police couldn’t find any trace of the Baddons, none of their belongings were in the household, no furniture, no clothes not even dirt tracked through the house from Henry and Alicia’s shoes.

Nervously, following the news story of what happened to Maria’s friends, Maria’s parents decided to visit her a bit earlier than usual. Once they got to the front desk, the man asked them where Maria was, they looked at each other then told him she was a patient at the institution on the 5th floor. “Yes, I understand, but you two came earlier and said you were going to take her for a walk around the outside of the building, so where is she?” The man asked in a concerned tone. “Sir this is our first time here today, I can assure you we didn’t take Maria from this institution this morning.” said Maria’s mother. The man looked at the both of them then said “Earlier you had two small boys with you as well, they were asking everyone to play hide and seek?”. The man said, trying to get them to remember. Maria’s parents looked at each other then went past the desk, they ran to the room Maria was staying in and found that she wasn’t there. They felt a draft coming through the window, it was wide open. They stuck their heads out and saw their precious daughter, 5 stories down, faced down, not moving.
