Red Rose

He gave to her a blood-red rose,

Just a single stem.

What a romantic gesture

That united them!

She breathed it in, that heady scent,

She embraced the myth

That true love would never go

A very special gift.

But then that rose, it withered,

And it’s fragrance it did fade,

He did not love her any more,

He’d gladly do a trade.

Her heart began to shatter,

Her emotions were all torn,

Ripped apart and shredded

By that dying thorn.

He turned his back, he shunned her,

No matter how she cried,

For just like that single rose

His love for her had died.
