Novocaine is a synthetic compound used as a local anesthetic mostly by dentists. Basically, it gives you a numbing feeling so the doctors can perform their procedures. I am using this drug as a metaphor for desiring to numb the pain a heartbreak leaves behind. For some people, their Novocaine might be sex, party and drugs; for other people it might be a musical or artistic outlet; for some people, it's hard to find their Novocaine. It is a personal poem I wrote last year after going through a rough time. I hope you enjoy.

Novocaine

Every night there's a different lover,
As I'm trying to forget you in the arms of another.
And most days I try to drink you away,
But my sanest thoughts begin to stray.

Doctor says in time I'll heal,
But these feelings I can't conceal.
You're with me like a stain on a white shirt,
And the thought of you makes my chest hurt.

I'm really trying to stay sober and clean,
But these memories cannot be unseen.
I keep breathing you in like smoke,
And I always end up choked.

It seems I can't get out of trouble,
'Cause I can't move on from our bursted bubble.
And every time it's all about to collapse,
I always end up heading towards a relapse.

So I'm asking the bartender for another shot,
And I want the strongest one he's got.
Need to numb the fire in my heart,
And make your ghost finally depart.

Your love was the only drug I needed,
But you ledt me here defeated.
And because I don't want to drag you like a chain,
I take this Novocaine to un-feel this pain.
