Chapter 100

"I think we should talk about something before talking to everyone else." Kerim leaned against the closed door.

Katherine had left the room to take care of Laney since Ava was still resting in the guestroom.

Dom was propted up on the bed looking back at his brother. "We have a lot to talk about. What subject do you mean first?"

"Ava."

"What about her?"

"She killed the guy that shot you. She was also shooting others along with us."

"Did you actually see her?"

"Yes and I think we need to address this because...I saw the look in her eyes, Dom. She enjoyed it."

"You're wrong. Ava wouldn't like doing something like that. She's...a little crazy but nothing that's close to being dangerous. She was probably caught up in the moment to help. It was mostly trying to survive. She was defending herself."

"Look, I know it's something that you don't want to hear but we have to see the reality of things. She's related to me. These genes I have came from our father's line of family. If she needs help it's better to do it now. We might not have seen it because she grew up in a loving home but if it gets worse...I don't want that to happen. I know you don't want that to be the end result. We can ask her about last night. Be casual about it. Send her to a shrink as well. Actually Chey should go and Beth. Last night was something they have never been used to or seen in their life."

"They'll see someone. I'm not against that. Katherine is not going to like you comparing Ava to you. She's not a psychopath."

"I know she isn't but we can't ignore if she likes killing. We'll nip it at the bud before it goes too far. For the moment I think we shouldn't talk about this with anyone else. Maybe just with Katherine and Juliet." Kerim suggested. "What do you think?"

"It's fine."

He gave a nod. "I'm going to go downstairs and see how everyone is doing. Most of them should be up by now. I'm glad you're okay. You don't know how powerless I felt when you..."

"When I died? I know I did for a brief moment, I'm sure I did."

"Did the white light call to you and you fought to not follow it?" Kerim teased. He was trying to lighten the mood. If he had lost Dom he didn't know what would have happened. His brother was all the family he had.

"Yes." Dom smiled slightly. He was being sarcastic. He couldn't explain it. He felt nothing, floating in the darkness. Suddenly it was like a jolt of electricity and he was back. Breathing and bleeding. He wasn't going to keep thinking about it. "Have you spoken to Lenard?"

His brother sighed. "Yes and we've got a problem back at the warehouse that I'm going to have to fix."

"What was it?"

"Do you really want to hear it?"

"Yes. I want to know why the hell we were attacked at our home. That was uncalled for."

"Austin claimed that the shipment was short. He accused Dalton of skimming off the top and you know how insulting that is. We know Dalton."

"Of course we do. We did business with him for years. He's trustworthy."

"Yep. Austin refused the shipment and said to take it up with you because we were not going to be accepting mediocre product."

"Shit."

"You got that right. Dalton got his men after such uncalled for insults and thought it best to kill us for the treatment he received."

"Why didn't Lenard try to warn us?"

"He did. He said he kept calling us but we wouldn't answer. He was also trying to get Dalton to understand that we had nothing to do with Austin's decision. It was too late though because we were already under attack."

"We need to deal with Austin and soon."

"I know. We're going to have to force Lenard to talk to us. We need to know what personal dealings they have. It's been too long and you've been to lenient with him."

Dom agreed. "Alright. As soon as I'm better."

"I'm really going now because I told Katherine that I wasn't going to keep you for long. She wants you to rest and she'll have my head."

He chuckled. "She threatened to kill me next time I scare her like last night."

"Fuck, I say the same thing. Get some sleep and I'll see you later. I'm going to go pay Austin a little visit tomorrow."

"Be careful."

"Sure. I'm taking Juliet with me. She's the best partner I could have." Kerim opened the door. "Sleep before Katherine sedates you."

Dom's laugh was the last he heard before he shut the door.

Ava's brow furrowed. Her shoulder hurt and she didn't know why. She could find out if only she opened her eyes.

She felt a warm hand brush her forehead and put the hair behind her ear.

Her eyes fluttered open and she smiled. "Mitch." She whispered.

"Hey." He was sitting beside her on the bed. He was dressed in blue jeans and a button up shirt. "How are you feeling?"

"My shoulder hurts." She glanced at it and could see that she was bandaged. That's right, they were attacked by masked men with guns.

Last night after her and Mitch slept together, that had her blushing a whole bunch of red shades, the doctor had come out to dig out the bullet. She had barely flinched which she thought should worry her but didn't.

She sat up as Mitch handed her a couple of painkillers and a glass of orange juice. She swallowed them and half the juice.

She licked her lips. "You changed."

"I went home as soon as I woke up to shower and get a fresh change of clothes. Then I came straight back."

"I must look horrible."

"Juste un peu." He winked.

She giggled. "You knew it was me the whole time?"

"Of course. What I want to know is if you knew it was me as well."

"I did. Chey told me to do it. Suggested it but I still did it."

"She told me the same."

She rolled her eyes. "Trust my sister to play matchmaker."

He took the glass of juice from her hand and set it down on the night table. He scooted closer to her. "Question is...did it work?" He lowered his face to hers. He left his lips centimeters from hers. Waiting for her.

"I believe it did." She closed the distance and moaned when their lips met.

In the back of her mind she thought that what had happened between them would have been a one time thing. He had always expressed how much he didn't like her that way. He was certainly demonstrating how wrong she had been.

His lips were soft and oh so good at caressing her own. Sadly he pulled away when she wanted him to lower her on the bed.

"We shouldn't go further. Not when everyone is probably awake by now." He chuckled.

"Why not?" She pouted.

"I saw your aunt Juliet earlier and she reminded me of the meaning of locking the door. She said she walked in on us while we were 'fucking'." He did quotation marks. "Her words, not mine. I would word it completely different than that. Anyway, said we should always lock the door from now on and do it when everyone is asleep."

She arched a brow. "Seriously?"

He nodded.

"I guess." She smiled. "I'm afraid to ask but I should because I don't know what this is exactly. What does this mean for us now?"

"I'm hoping that if I ask you out on a date you'll say yes. Is that too much to hope?"

"I don't know. I thought you didn't like me."

"I didn't like you when I first met you. You were throwing yourself at me and I hated it. Then recently, I think after we started getting to know each other for the dancing charity thing...I slowly got to meet the real you. Not the face you put on for everyone but the one you keep hidden. I think I started to genuinely like you."

"But that day at the theme park, when I kissed you and you didn't return it...I felt so stupid."

"I'm sorry for that. You took me by surprise and I thought that if we kissed and I found out that indeed I didn't hold romantic feelings for you, I would end up hurting you. I didn't want that."

"Then last night when I kissed you again you returned it. Quite enthusiastically." She clicked her tongue.

"Yes. It seems that I was wrong in the perhaps not having romantic feelings. I found that I like you a lot, Ava. I want to pursue this and see where it leads us. Do you?"

She opened her mouth to answer but they were interrupted when the door burst open. Thank god she was wearing a tank top that she had put on when the doctor had come to check her. It would have been embarrassing otherwise.

It turned out to be Laney followed by Katherine.

"Ava! Meemaw said you hurt." She came running into the room and jumped on the bed to give her a hug. "Mitch!" She hugged him tightly too.

"She was wondering where you were." Katherine explained. "I was hoping that you were awake by now. How are you feeling?"

"I was in pain but Mitch gave me a couple of painkillers. I'm starting to feel better."

"Are you well enough to go downstairs and eat or would you like something to be brought up to you?"

"I can get dressed and go."

"You should rest. I'll get you something from the kitchen." Mitch stood up. "I'll eat with you if you'd like."

"Is this going to count as a date?" She bit her lip.

He grinned. "Maybe, you never did say you would say yes."

"Yes. I'll go on a date with you."

"Alright. This is not a date though. I will do something better for it. I'll be back."

"There's chicken soup and some bread." Katherine told him as he walked out of the room. "Such a nice boy. I like him."

"I like him too." Ava really did like him and she was going to admit it. Although she should tell him first about Edward. Before anything really got started between them they should start with no secrets.

"What is it?" Katherine asked when she noticed the frown on her daughter's face.

"There's something that I have to tell all of you but I think I should tell Mitch first. I don't want secrets between us."

"Is it serious?"

"Yes." She looked at Laney. "It has to do with her father. Rather who he is."

"You've never wanted to talk about it before."

"I know but after last night and what happened to dad I made a promise to change and I need to start with that. How is he by the way?"

"He woke up better and I believe he's sleeping again at the moment." Katherine was upset about what had happened. It could have all gone a lot worse. Thankfully her family was fine but she was going to have a serious talk with her husband. She wanted him out of this life and for good.

"What happened? I want to know who those men were. Their intent was not to take us hostage or anything. It was to genuinely kill us."

"I know and we will tell you everything. We were planning to do it tomorrow though after everyone has rested and gotten a little over the traumatic night."

Ava nodded. That would be reasonable.

"I will take Laney with me and let you eat. You should rest more as well. If you need a shower I'm more than welcome to help you, just let me know."

"A shower would do me good. After we eat I would like one."

"Alright. Come on Laney, we're going to leave Ava alone."

Laney took Katherine's hand. "Goodbye Ava."

She smiled. "Laney, I think it's about time you should call me mom. I think Ava is getting a bit overrated."

Her small eyes opened as wide as saucers.

"Is that okay?"

She bobbed her head. "Yes...mommy."

Katherine smiled. Last night may have been horrific but it had brought out something good. "I'll see you in a while."

She herded out her granddaughter. Mitch was carrying a tray with their food. She let him go in before closing the door.

"Thank you for bringing it up." Ava thanked him as he set it down on the bed and handed her a bowl of soup.

"It's the least I can do."

"There's something I want to talk to you first before we start dating."

He sat down beside her. "You can tell me anything. I'll listen without interruption." He was too kind for her.

Before she could change her mind about him being too good for her she stirred her soup. "You must have heard that I left this place over two years ago pregnant. I didn't know I was until I was already in europe. I wasn't happy about it but I accepted it after months passed. The reason why I was mostly not happy about it is because at the time there was only one man I had been with. He was an older man, a lot older than me and it had only been a fling. It only lasted a couple of months."

He continued to listen without saying a word.

"You all know this man, Laney's father. I kept it secret even after coming back because for one I thought it was no one's business and secondly he was now married." She felt ashamed now, especially after having an affair with Edward recently. "You know how I was when you met me. I slept with whoever without a care. I kind of took on that attitude after having Laney. I felt like my life shouldn't be over and that I was going to miss out on a lot if I wasn't wild. Anyway...you're probably going to hate me after I tell you this and backtrack on wanting to go on a date."

She paused and took a deep breath.

"The man I'm talking about is Edward, Beth's husband."

Mitch's brow furrowed and he looked close to being angry.

"I had an affair with him while he was married. It only ended a little over a month ago." She whispered it as if hoping that he wouldn't be able to hear her confession. "I regret it. I do. It was something I'm definitely not proud of. I think I was starting to feel bad for doing that to Beth."

He suddenly stood up. He set the bowl on the tray and walked out of the room.

Tears pooled in her eyes. She knew this would happen. Who would want to be with someone as fucked up as her? She deserved to be alone after all the things she had done.
