Chapter 116

Ava tried Mitch's number again but he wasn't answering.

She was supposed to be going to Austin's house again. She had gone another time since the first but that was all. She had tried to keep it strictly seeing him for a dinner once in a while but he was starting to get pushy.

This was her last chance at finding out anything. She didn't want to put herself in a dangerous situation.

She put her phone in her purse. She was going to have to go without him. He would know where to find her if need be.

"I'll be back tomorrow morning. Thank you for staying." She had hired a babysitter since Briar had left town to go to Beth's wedding.

She hadn't gone for obvious reasons. Everyone now knew that Laney was Edward's daughter. It would have been weird her attending Beth's wedding when she had been Edward's wife.

Needless to say she wasn't sad about it.

She grabbed the keys to her car and headed out. She drove to Austin's house and parked out on the street.

The lights were dark except for the one on the porch. She got out of her car and went up the steps to the door.

She knocked and waited for him to answer. She looked at her phone hoping for at least a text from Mitch. There was nothing. It really wasn't like him not to send anything.

Austin opened the door and gave her one of those grins that made her skin crawl. "You have finally arrived. I have a surprise for you."

She put on a fake smile. "You know how I feel about surprises. I don't like them."

He motioned her to enter. "I know but I thought I should give it to you anyway."

"What is it and why is your house so dark?" She walked in but there was only a light coming from the bedroom after he shut the front door.

"Because of this." He flooded the living room with light and showed her the surprise.

Her heart stopped cold at the sight of Mitch beaten and tied to a chair.

"You know you are one smart bitch. You tried to fool me and have me follow you like a puppy. It took me a while but I found out what it is you were hiding from me. I wonder though why you wanted to target me. Did your father put you up to this?" Austin walked around her and stopped close to Mitch.

"Is he...alive?" Her voice trembled. He wasn't moving at all. His face was cut and bruising. Blood trickled down the side of his face.

Austin smirked. "He is unfortunately. I want him to see something first before I finish him off." He turned to Mitch and punched him hard.

Ava cried out and tears slipped from her eyes.

Mitch groaned and was barely able to open one eye. "Ava..." His tone was full of anguish. He didn't want her there. If only he had been able to warn her.

"There. Isn't this lovely? You two united one last time." Austin came back towards her. She barely glanced at him, her only concern was the man she loved. "You're going to regret ever trying to fuck with me."

He grabbed her and she screamed earning a punch to her jaw. She tried clawing at his face but he effectively held her arms away.

He dragged her onto his couch and got on top of her.

Mitch struggled on his chair as he watched Austin tear at her clothes. He couldn't do a thing to protect her.

She managed to kick Austin between his legs. It momentarily incapacitated him and she pushed him off. She slipped but managed to keep her balance as she ran out of the living room.

She ended up in the kitchen not sure what to do as she knew that there were like three locks on the back door.

Austin wasn't far behind as he entered.

She opened up the drawers looking for something to use against him.

He turned her around roughly and began to hit her hard in the face. Her vision blurred and she swung forward whatever she had in her hand.

He stopped hitting her and gasped.

She opened her eyes to see his widen in surprise. He staggered back and stared at her hand. She had grabbed an ice pick.

With renewed vengeance she attacked him. She stabbed him again and again even after he fell to the floor.

When she finally felt tired she got off of him and crawled towards the wall. She stared at his unmoving body, his lifeless eyes looking up in horror.

She didn't feel any regret or sorrow. He deserved it.

She heard Mitch's voice coming from the living room. She stood up and went back slowly. Without a word she untied him from the chair.

He groaned and moved his stiff arms. He had been tied for a few hours after some goons had grabbed him from behind the bakery.

"Where is he?" His voice sounded rough and his throat hurt. He was barely able to see but he could tell that Austin wasn't around.

"In the kitchen..." She looked away.

"Did you knock him out?"

She shook her head.

He didn't understand.

"I...I think I need to call my dad."

Dom was already in bed when his phone rang. It was eleven and he was just falling asleep. He reached for it and saw that it was Ava.

"Who is it?" Katherine rolled onto her side to look at him.

"Ava." He told her as he answered the call. "Hi sweetheart."

"Dad...I need to tell you something and before you get mad you should know that I was doing this to help."

He sat up to listen better. "What are you talking about?"

"I may have murdered Austin Gordon."

He thought he was either losing his hearing or going insane. "What did you say?"

"That Austin is dead and I may have done it. Actually I did...he's really dead."

"How...When..." He wasn't sure what to ask first. "He's dead?"

"Yes. I'm looking at his dead body. I don't know what to do. Should I call the police? I...I'm going to jail aren't I?"

"No. You are not going to that place. I'll fix this. Where are you?"

"At his house."

"I'm going to send Lenard, he works for us and some other guys. You need to stay there until they get there. Fuck."

"I'm so sorry."

"It's okay. We'll talk about it when we get home. We're hours away but we'll be there in the morning. Go straight home as soon as Lenard gets there."

"Okay. Thank you daddy."

"I'll see you tomorrow sweetheart." He hung up the phone and stared at it.

He needed to talk to Kerim, Daniel and probably Linc.

He got out of the bed and searched for a shirt to put on.

"Where are you going?" His wife asked curious and half asleep.

"I need to talk to Kerim. I'll tell you in the morning. Get some rest, we're leaving early."

She nodded and cuddled into the bedspread.

He went out of the bedroom and into the living room. The others were staying in cabins close by, that at least was a relief.

First he called Lenard and briefly told him the situation. Seeing as he barely knew anything himself. He told him to look for the evidence that they needed to clear Maleah and Jake. Also that he should destroy anything that might incriminate Ava or their family into the drug business.

After that he called up his brother, then Daniel and told him to call Linc. They were going to have an emergency meeting.

He waited for them to arrive pacing the living room. He kept asking himself what the hell Ava was doing in Austin's house. The only thought that came to mind was a horrible one.

The other three men arrived and they waited for him to speak.

"We have a problem."

"What is it?" Kerim asked straight to business.

"Austin Gordon is dead."

"What? When did this happen?" Daniel frowned.

"A few moments ago, I don't know."

"Then how do you know?" Linc was looking at him suspiciously.

"I was called and informed."

"Shit. Who the fuck beat us to him and why now?" Kerim was angry. He was the one that wanted to kill the man. Not only that, they had been waiting until they could clear his daughter's name.

"Ava?" All three were just as surprised as Dom had been when she told him.

"Yes. I don't know specifics. What I need from you both is that you understand that I have to protect my daughter." He told Linc and Daniel. "The police will be called but we need time."

Daniel looked at Linc. "We'll give you 24 hours and not a minute more. We need to search his house ourselves."

"Alright. I'll let our men know. Thank you."

"I can't believe we're turning into criminals." Linc shook his head.

"Not technically. We protect family Linc. There must be a reason why Ava did what she did. It could have been self defense." Daniel reasoned.

"Then why not call the police?"

"There are more people involved. You know what they are doing."

He sighed. "Is this all? I'm tired and Charlie's going to wonder where I am if she wakes up."

"Go. I'm going to talk to Dom and Kerim." Daniel stayed. When they were alone he turned to Dom. "I'll try to do what I can to keep Ava out of the investigation but if there is evidence, I won't be able to stop what happens."

"I'm having my men clean up evidence. I'll let them know to be thorough."

"I think I'm going to leave right now to make sure they do. I'll take a sweep of the place as well." Kerim suggested.

"Thank you. I'll see you tomorrow then."

He gave Dom a nod and headed for the door. "I'll make sure Ava is alright. Goodnight."

"I'm leaving too. 24 hours." Daniel reminded Dom on his way out.

He sighed and sat down on the couch as he was left alone. He hoped his daughter was okay.

"Ava? You need to remember that you did it because you had to." Mitch soothingly rubbed her back. He was avoiding looking inside the kitchen after his first glance.

It was gruesome. Horribly gruesome.

"I'll take you back to my place to get cleaned up. As soon as your father's workers get here."

She continued to stare at the kitchen doorway. Knowing who laid there bloody and dead. "Mitch..."

"Am I a bad person?"

"Oh mon coeur, of course not." He engulfed her in a hug. "You were simply defending yourself against that man.

"That's not what I meant. I could have finished him with one good stab but I didn't. I couldn't stop and I...I actually liked it." A sob errupted from her chest. "I wanted to kill him. I am bad, worse, I'm evil."

"You're not." He lifted her chin. "You're a wonderful person. It's only natural to want to kill that man. Look at me."

Her glazed eyes met his. "Do you really believe that?"

"Of course I do. Otherwise I never would have fallen in love with you." He rubbed his thumb across her bottom lip.

She melted inside. "You love me?"

"I believe I do."

"I've fallen for you too." She closed her eyes and made to kiss him but there was a hard knock on the door. She sighed.

"We'll have plenty of time for that later. We need to take care of this now." He gave her a peck on the forehead. "Everything is going to be alright."

He stepped away and opened the front door. Lenard stepped in followed by a couple of other men. They were well dressed and looked like like they were ready for business.

"You must be Ava. I am Lenard." He presented himself. "I'm here to take care of this. Where is he?"

"In the kitchen." She motioned her hand that way.

He gave a curt nod and made his way over there. He entered the dark room and turned on the light switch. Austin was lying on the floor staring up at the ceiling. His chest and stomach were a bloodied mess along with the floor around him.

He glanced at Ava who had followed him into the room. Her black dress probably was not meant to be darker in some places. There was some dried blood on her legs, arms and hands.

"Did you touch anything?"

"The ice pick and probably other things seeing as I was trying to escape from him."

Her face was evidence of why she wanted to get away. Although she wasn't as beaten as her boyfriend.

"I've been here a couple of other time though. I don't know if my fingerprints are around here. He may not have cleaned anything."

"That complicates things a bit. We'll try to clean up everything and get rid of evidence. You can go home. Your father will be here tomorrow. You should rest."

"I will take her. Thank you for this." Mitch felt a little weird about thanking them but what else could he say. All of this was out of the ordinary.

He led her away and out of the house. He was glad that they had her car to take.

"Ready to go?" He opened the passenger door.
