Chapter 119

"How do you feel?" Mitch poured coffee for Ava.

"Tired. My head hurts." She pushed back the hair away from her face and into a ponytail. "You look awful."

She went over to him and delicately touched the bruising on his face. After a shower he only looked slightly better. They had rested as much as they could.

It was late and she was anxiously waiting, knowing that the police was going to go Austin's house at any minute.

"He hurt you badly."

"I'm alright. It will heal." He managed a small smile.

It amazed her what kind of guy she had by her side. How had she gotten so lucky?

"I'm the lucky one." He whispered to her. It was like he had read her mind. "Your eyes tell me everything." He explained. He rested his forehead against hers. "I'll be by your side no matter what."

"Thank you. I love you so much."

"I do too. Are you going to go see Laney?"

She nodded. "I have to. She must be wondering why she hasn't seen either of us all day."

"Your face doesn't look that bad anymore. The ice helped."

"He hit like a bitch, that's why." Her face was slightly sore but in a few days she would be fine.

"Is your father going to call you when Daniel and Linc get there?"

"I don't know. We didn't exactly establish a plan for that."

"Do you want me to go home with you?"

She shook her head. "Laney might get upset if she sees you like that. Let's wait a couple of days before you see her. I'll come by tomorrow though." She kissed him softly on the lips and stepped back to get her coffee.

He had made it just like she liked it. It would wake her up and ready her for the drive home.

"I wish I could stay here but I have a responsability at home."

"I'm not bothered. I wish to go with you myself and see Laney. I miss her very much."

"I should go." She set her coffee cup in the sink.

He wrapped his arms around her from behind and kissed her neck. She glanced at him from over her shoulder.

He gazed into her eyes, he already thought of Ava and Laney as part of his family. He would defend them from anything or anyone. He would be there when they needed him.

"What?" She smiled.

"Nothing. Drive carefully. Tell me if anything happens."

"I will." She turned around in his arms and sighed. "I'll see you tomorrow. Try to get some more sleep." She raised her chin and pecked him.

He walked with her to the front of his apartment and opened the door for her. She gave him a small wave and left.

She didn't want to leave but she couldn't be away from Laney too long.

She wondered what was going on at Austin's house this moment.

"Who would just leave him here like this?" Pete stared at Austin's body. They were waiting for the medical examiner to arrive and take a look at the body.

"What kind of person would have actually done something with the body?" Linc countered.

"At least we now have our guy. Let's hope that the accusations made agaisnt him were true. Imagine if someone killed the wrong guy."

"What do we have here?" Caroline arrived with Ted.

"Austin Gordon. It appears as if he was stabbed with an object. There is no kitchen knife missing, we have to assume that the murder weapon may be around here or taken by our killer." Pete explained.

She walked around the kitchen. "Smells like the place was cleaned. Bleach but I don't understand why if the body is still on the floor in a puddle of blood. Something else was cleaned."

"Maybe there was a cleaning lady before he was killed." Ted suggested.

"I don't know. Let's take everything back to the station. Also have the place closed up so we don't have anyone traipsing through our scene."

"Aren't we the ones that should be in charge? It is our jurisdiction and we have yet to know what he's done exactly." Linc frowned.

"He could be someone linked to our case." She narrowed her eyes at him. "We should be the ones appointed here."

"Caroline, it's our case." Pete backed up his partner. "You can't do anything. I don't exactly know why you came."

"Really Pete? After everything that has happened between us?"

"Work is work. We've talked about it and we both understand. As of yet we do not know for sure that Austin is linked to your case. If he is then we will hand over this investigation to you. In the meantime respect our boundaries."

"Fine. I'll be leaving then." She walked out of the house. Ted sighed and followed after her.

"That should teach me not to sleep with coworkers." Pete grunted and walked off to the current searching into Austin's office that was going on.

Linc shook his head and wandered off to see what his father was doing.

They were taking samples of any fingerprints they could find. He already knew that everything should have been wiped down.

Daniel was talking to one of the cops. He told him to go search the bedroom with others before turning to Linc.

"So far no fingerprints. They will be looking for anything suspicious in his belongings. Hopefully we'll have better luck than Dom's men."

"They didn't find anything?"

"I don't know if I should be happy about that."

"I know how you feel about all of this and I'm sorry for dragging you into it." Daniel put his hand on Linc's shoulder. "I hope you can forgive me someday."

"I do. I guess we can't choose our family."

"Thank you for your help."

"It's fine. I have something I need to tell you and I hope I'll have your support for when the rest of the family finds out."

"What is it?"

"I asked Charlie to marry me."

Daniel was taken by surprise. "Isn't that a little soon?"

"Maybe but we know what we want and I'm sure of this."

"Well, congratulations then. I mean if she accepted." He chuckled.

"She did. We talked about it afterwards and we want to get married at the island. She hasn't seen it but I love going there and she's always wanted to have a beach wedding."

"Our vacations are coming up in June."

"Wow, that's a lot sooner than you two have been dating."

"I'll back you up with everyone else. Son, are you sure though?"

"Why are you asking me that again?"

"I'm asking because of Maleah. What are you going to tell her when she comes back?"

Linc looked away. He'd thought about her after he had found out that she may actually not have done what she was accused of. His thoughts were that he loved her but like a dear friend.

It changed nothing for the way he felt over Charlie. That's why he had kept his relationship with her and knew that he could move on without regret.

Maleah might not understand that but he couldn't help who he truly loved.

"She'll have to understand that sometimes things don't work out like we want them to."

"I hope she does. You don't want the wrath of Kerim and Juliet combined against you if Maleah comes out hurt from this."

"I'll try to withstand it."

"Hey Linc." Pete called him from the office doorway. "You might want to come check this out. Chief, you too."

Daniel and Linc went over to him and inside the room. They had uncovered a drawing from the wall and a safe. The combination was written in the painting and not well hidden.

It felt like a trap but Pete had decided to use it anyway. Austin may not have been very bright after all.

In the safe there were files on every member of the Wilkins and McIntosh family. Each one had an idea or way to hurt them.

"Adrian Wilkins suffered an accident back in his town a few months ago. Smoke inhalation was the worst of it. His companions were able to get him to safety before major damage could be caused. At least to him. The fire was on purpose." Pete informed them. "That wasn't the only thing. Jake McIntosh and Sophie Wilkins had a car accident in which she was left unable to walk. It says here the job was to kill Jake." He showed them the folder.

Linc took it and noticed the detailed way in which Jake's truck was sabotaged.

"We have Briar Wilkins' stabbing as well. The hired hand is the man that won't talk in jail. Miranda Wilkins, former Reynolds, says that she was manipulated to hurt her husband, Grant Reynolds. This guy was a sick fuck."

Daniel shook his head as he looked over the files. "James Wilkins didn't have anything happen to him yet. It was in the works though. Says future referrence have him beaten to death to make sure it's done right. No more car accidents."

"Where's Charlie's file?" Linc riffled through them.

"It's not here." Pete told him.

"What do you mean it's not here? It should be. Where the fuck is it?"

"I don't know."

"I want to know what the hell this man was doing before he died or what he was planning. I want to know why her file isn't here. Where's the computer?"

"He doesn't have one. We searched. Planner perhaps. There has to be a way this man kept his appointments or contacts."

"Did you search his body?"

"Can't touch it. You know the rules."

"His phone. We need his phone."

"I'm going to go see if the medical examiner is done." Daniel left the room.

Linc thought he was going to go crazy if he didn't find out what that man had planned for Charlie.

"Hey, I think I found it." Pete interrupted his thoughts as he brought out a folder that had been stuck to the safe. "Damn thing." He read over the name. "Yeah, it's this one."

He handed it to Linc who took a relieved breath. "Charlotte Wilkins." He read as he opened it. There was a paper attached to the picture of her. "Have her raped just like her mother. Priority before James as soon as I'm back as boss." He was glad Austin Gordon was dead.

"Is it anything good?"

He gave Pete a look.

"You know what I mean. Did he get to her yet?"

"No. He never got the chance to hire the man to do the job he wanted."

"Then that's good."

"Yeah, it is. We'll take these back to the station. We'll find out who he sent to get the jobs done."

"Alright. We'll continue the search and see if we find anything else. His death will be announced in the morning." Pete motioned to the bright lights out of the house. "Reporters are here."

"This is one story that should make the news. I think a lot of people are going to be happy that this man is dead. I am definitely one of them." Linc stepped out. He needed to breathe.

Ava did a good thing. It may have been wrong but he would always be grateful.
