Chapter 121

Maleah's scream had Jake rushing to wake up and caused him to fall off the couch. He squinted against the light coming from the front door.

It wasn't that late but he was sure that he needed to hurry up and get ready for work.

He quickly got up and ran out the front door where her screaming had come from.

She looked enraged by the devil himself as she was staring at her garden. Well, where her lovely garden used to be. The plants were dead for sure.

"That bitch." She hissed. "Oh, this is fucking war."

He got the idea. The bottle Alice had given her was definitely not fertilizer. "Maleah..."

She let out a puff of air and stomped back towards the house. She pushed past him and went inside. He followed after her not sure what she was going to do. She ended up in her bedroom, slamming the door in his face.

He would deal with her as soon as he was ready for work.

He showered and changed into his work clothes. In the kitchen he grabbed a couple of cookies that were left for breakfast.

She came back out with her things for the garden. Her mouth in a prim line.

"Are you going to be okay?" He asked. He was going to be late if he didn't leave in a the next couple of minutes but he didn't want to leave her without making sure she would be fine.

"What do you think? That murderous bitch killed my babies."

"What are you going to do?"

She smiled sinisterly. "What does one do in a war? You counter attack."

"I don't think you'll be able to do much damage with that." He motioned to her tools.

"I know. This shovel is way too small to dig her grave." She took a deep breath and let it out. She was desperately trying to keep her cool. "I have something else planned. You'll see."

"I'm terrified. I have to go."

She gave him a nod.

They both walked out of the house.

"I'll see you tonight." He kissed her on the cheek before heading for his car.

They were outside and the neighbors could be watching. Not that he would be bothered if they weren't. He enjoyed the little things they got to do like that.

She got down to business. She was going to have to dig up everything and start all over.

With angry thrusts she dug into the dirt and brought out all the dead vegetation.

It didn't take long for the criminal mastermind to come over and talk to her.

"Oh god, what happened to your garden?"

Maleah clenched her teeth and tried to keep calm. She looked up at Alice. "Can't you guess?"

"No." Alice shook her head as if actually considering what had happened. Then her eyes opened wide and she pretended to look horrified. "Don't tell me that the fertilizer I gave you did this."

"I am so, so sorry Megan.. I swear that my plants thrive. Ah..." She gasped and covered her mouth. "Wait, what if...just hypothetically I gave you the wrong bottle. Yes, that could have happened. I mean, my brain has been all over the place because of this damn potluck we had coming." She giggled. "Oh my god, I am sorry. You worked so hard on this garden. Just like I worked so hard on making my brownies extra special. It feels awful doesn't it to have it all taken away? Not that I'm saying I did this on purpose. Absolutely not."

This snake. Maleah was starting to lose it. "You know what Alice, I don't blame you. I say we are even. How about that?"

Alice grinned. "Of course even though I didn't do this on purpose one can learn from their mistakes."

There came Pookie again sniffling around Maleah's yard. She hated that freaking dog. She wasn't evil enough to poison it but maybe...she smiled.

"I really should get back to fixing this."

"You're right. I'll let you to it neighbor." Alice walked away and called to Pookie. Together they crossed the street to her house.

Maleah was not going to strike at this moment. Hell no. She was going to let Alice fall into a sense of comfort and think that this was all in the past. Then she would strike and make her pay.

With vengeance on her mind she finished up her garden. She was going to have to go to the store and buy some more seeds.

She would also use the time to look for what she was going to need.

"You're trying to tell me that my mother was raped? I...Why didn't they tell me?" Charlie was having lunch with Linc in the bakery.

"I'm sorry. Maybe they were trying to protect you."

"They should have just told me. I wouldn't have judged. What else are they hiding? Who is this Austin Gordon that wanted to make their lives along with their kids' miserable?"

"You can only ask."

"I can't believe this."

He reached over and took her hand in his. "This is good news though. With him dead they don't have to keep worrying about him."

"I guess but a little heads up would have worked. What if he had gotten to me?"

"Don't say that, please. If something had happened to you..." He brought her hand to his lips. He didn't want to think of that.

"Sorry. I'm alright though. I'm here." She smiled at his tenderness and scooted closer. "Let's talk about something happy, like our wedding."

He grinned. "That certainly makes me happy. You still want to get married at the island?"

"Definitely. A private island wedding. It's romantic."

"Not that private, our two families are going to be there."

"Are you sure your family will be fine with that?"

"I'm positive. The island rules have changed quite a bit each generation. This is also a special occasion."

"Alright. We have to tell my parents. Actually they kind of owe me for not telling me everything about their lives. They should be happy for me."

"They will be. I told my dad last night."

"What did he say?"

"He was surprised then congratulated me. He understands that I'm my own man and I'm old enough to decide who I want to marry."

"Are you sure you want to marry me?"

"Mmhmm." He pressed a kiss on her mouth.

She smiled and moved away. It made her shy so much PDA. "I guess I'll have to look for a wedding dress as soon as possible."

"Are you going to have a maid of honor?"

"Hmm, I don't know. Could I have a guy maid of honor? James has always been my best friend."

"I think that's okay. Pete would be my best man though."

"It's okay. James did pretend to be gay for a few months so maybe he can stand to dance with him." She was joking of course. "I hope he accepts to stand by me."

"He will." He pushed a loose strand of hair from her tight bun away from her face.

"Oh no. My hair is coming undone." She frowned and stood up. "I'm going to go fix it."

He looked at his watch. "I have to go. My lunch is almost over, barely enough time to make it to the station."

"I'll get a ride don't worry." She kissed him on the cheek when he stood. "I'll see you at home."

She went to the bathroom and he headed out to his car. When he got to the station he saw his mother inside his father's office.

He knew he had to go in there and greet her. He knocked on the door and opened it. "Hi mom."

"Lincoln Swanson." She crossed her arms. "How could you not call me to tell me that you are getting married."

"I only told dad last night. I haven't exactly had time to deal with that."

"I don't care. A text would have been nice. There's preparations to be made. I have to make an appointment with Charlie and see what she wants for the wedding." Delilah quickly took out her phone. "Give me her number."

He sighed. He told her the number. "Don't call her now though, she does work quite a bit. I would say to try her after seven."

"I will."

"I'm sure that's not the only reason you're here."

"You're right. I wanted to see how everything was going with that Gordon guy."

"Nothing new as I'm sure dad told you."

Daniel nodded. "Luckily no prints were found. We're looking into known aquaintances but Dom's men did a good job on making anything important disappear. They only left the folders in the safe because it had nothing to do with them or Maleah."

"Great, we have nothing to help her." Delilah didn't like that. She knew Juliet was probably upset over it.

"We're not giving up though." He assured.

Linc agreed. "We're working hard and we'll find whatever it is he hid. I'm going to my desk to work. I'll see you two later." He left the office and went to his desk.

Pete was settled in his. "How was lunch?"

"Great. Quick question. Do you want to be my best man?"

"You serious?" That got a smile out of him.

"Then hell yes I want to be your best man."

"You're not doing this because you'll be going to the island are you?" Linc teased.

Pete rolled his eyes. "Of course not, that's just a bonus."

They got straight to work. Nothing much could be done only to keep investigating Austin. They had also made sure to let the Wilkins family and McIntosh know that they had found him.

They were certainly relieved for that.
