Chapter 136

Maleah got up and dressed. It was mid afternoon and she knew Linc had to be at his place by now. Her mother had told her that her uncle Dom and family would be arriving in the morning.

She hadn't done much in the last two weeks other than stay in her room most of the time.

Her parents had gotten her up to date with everything that had happened since she had left. The illegal stuff included.

She wasn't sure how she felt about that. She loved her parents. It was their choice she guessed.

She pulled her hair up in a ponytail. Before coming back home she had died it. It was back to brown but now it had some golden highlights. She hadn't wanted to part with that color completely.

After putting on some make up she was ready.

She grabbed her car keys and headed down the stairs.

"Ah, the prodigal daughter makes an appearance." Ava greeted her in the foyer. It looked like she was heading out herself.

"Ava."

"Maleah. How you doin'? I haven't seen you in months. You look good."

"Thanks. I'm good. You? I heard you're dating the french bakery guy."

"Yep. Things are going great between us."

"Great for you. Well, I'm off. I'll see you later."

"Yeah sure, I'm going out too."

They walked outside to their cars. Each going in a different direction.

Maleah was nervous a little bit. She hadn't called Linc at all to tell him that she was coming over. She wanted to surprise him. He must already know that she was home.

She hoped that he would be happy to see her.

She needed to get her life back on track and get out of the funk she had been lately.

Jake had texted and called her a few times at first but because she had ignored it all he had stopped. Nothing would be going anywhere with him.

They were polar opposites who had an adventure with each other and that was all.

At least that's what she kept telling herself.

She made it to Linc's apartment building and saw his car in it's parking spot. She smiled and parked.

She paced in the elevator and thought of what she was going to tell him. Should she give him a bright smile and just be like, 'I'm back!'. No, it had to be something more romantic.

Damn, she should have worn sexy lingerie underneath. She had on a plain silk set.

They would probably get into sex pretty quickly. That was always their thing.

Getting off on his floor she made her way to his door. She took a deep breath and knocked.

She heard the footsteps inside and the unlocking of the door. She bit her lip as it opened.

He looked exactly the same. Nothing had changed. Her heart filled with the love that she had for him as it always had. He had that stubble that she found handsome.

"Maleah." He looked surprised at seeing her.

Words escaped her. There was only one thing she wanted to do. She surprised him by jumping at him. She threw her arms around him and pressed her lips to his.

She kissed him enthusiastically. She had missed this.

He mumbled something but she didn't give him a chance to repeat it.

She pushed him into the apartment and kicked the door shut with her foot. He stumbled backwards and nearly fell to the floor but didn't because she had led him back where she knew the couch was.

They both fell on it. She on top of him. He grabbed her arms and tried to push her off. She thought he was trying to help her undress.

She tore at his shirt instead and buttons flew everywhere. She didn't want to stop kissing him though even when he tried to move his head.

"Lincoln!"

He was finally able to shove Maleah off of him but only because she was shocked to hear a woman screaming at them. Said woman was his wife.

"Who the fuck is she?" Maleah breathed hard as she frowned at Charlie.

Charlie glared at her husband. She had been in the bedroom getting dressed after a shower to hear the front door slam and shuffling in the living room. She went to investigate only to find Maleah and Linc making out on the couch.

"This isn't what it looks like." He tried to bring the front of his shirt back closed but it was useless. The buttons were gone.

"What do you mean it isn't what it looks like? Of course it is. We were about to have sex."

"No, no we weren't." He stood up and stepped away from Maleah, also away from Charlie. "This is a misunderstanding. I tried to stop you but god, you're strong."

Charlie stood there with her arms crossed. She wanted him to tell Maleah what was going on. She was very upset.

Maleah got off the couch and stared her down. Who the hell was she and what was she doing in her boyfriend's apartment?

"Maleah, what are you doing here?"

"I came to see you. I have so much to tell you and you just got back from the island."

"We do have to talk. I was going to text you later to see if you wanted to have breakfast tomorrow."

"Well I'm here now and I want some answers. Who the fuck is this bitch?" She motioned to Charlie.

"Excuse me? You don't even know me."

"I know you enough to know that this is my man's apartment. Not yours hussy."

"I am not a hussy!"

"A lot has changed since you left." Linc interrupted. "Charlie, why don't you go back to the bedroom while I talk to Maleah."

"Like hell I'm leaving you alone with her." She said at the same time Maleah said, "Like hell she's going into your bedroom."

They continued to glare at each other.

Maleah narrowed her eyes. "I know you. I've met you before at a party or something like that."

"The christmas event."

"Right. I didn't like you."

"You barely even interacted with me."

"It was enough. What are you doing here?"

"Let Linc answer that question."

They both turned to him. Great.

He cleared his throat. "I have something I need to tell you."

"Spit it out then."

"Charlie is...she's...my wife."

There was a silence for a few seconds before Maleah bursted out laughing. "That's...woo, that's a good one. Like I'm going to believe that bullshit."

"It's true. We got married a month ago on the island."

Her smile started to undo itself. "No, that's not possible. You're Lincoln fucking Swanson. You have issues with commitment. You...you couldn't move in with me after a month of dating, much less have gotten together with her and married in less than six months. I haven't been gone that long. You're joking. You can't be married."

"All our family was at the wedding, including hers. Anyone you ask they will tell you."

She thought she was going to pass out. She got lightheaded suddenly. She shook her head. "No, that's not true."

"You left with Jake. What did you think was going to happen? That I was going to sit here and wait for you?"

The pain in her chest grew to anger. "Did you think I wanted to leave?! I had to run because I was going to be sent to prison for a crime I didn't commit! You should have known that I wasn't capable of those crimes!"

"All the evidence was against you? How could I believe you? Especially when you two left."

"You should have believed me because you knew me!" She clenched her hands. "How could you marry someone after barely meeting them and not commit to me after years of knowing each other? How could you give her more than me?!"

"Because I love her!"

It was a slap to the face. It was proof that he never loved her.

He was too harsh. "I mean, I love her like I couldn't love you. It doesn't mean that I don't love you Maleah, it's just different."

Her eyes burned with unshed tears.

Charlie's anger from the beginning diminshed. She could see the raw hurt in the other woman. She felt uncomfortable witnessing it. She should have left them alone to talk.

"Don't say that." Maleah set her jaw. "Don't say you love me. If you did you never would have hurt me this way. Didn't you think I would come back believing we were still together? That I would come with the illusion that we would be like before?"

"I thought you would realize that I would think differently."

"Well I didn't. You replaced me with this..." She looked at Charlie. "Bimbo. I don't know why I'm even surprised. You've never lasted too long in a relationship. I think I was the longest."

"It's different."

She ignored him. Instead she directed her words to Charlie. "I don't wish happiness for you. I hope that he'll break your heart like he just did with me. I hope that he'll dump your ass for someone else. And I hope that you can live with yourself knowing that you took the love of my life away from me, because one day, another bitch is going to do the same to you."

She walked by between them and to the door. She opened it. Before she headed out she had one last thing to say.

She glanced at them over her shoulder. "May you rot in hell, both of you."

The door slammed close behind her.

Charlie stared hard at the ground. Maleah's words had hit home. Linc had easily gotten over Maleah and their whole relationship. He could do the same with her.

"That was something else. Along the lines of what I thought might happen. Thought I had a bit of more time though before having to face her." Linc chuckled disheartedly. He didn't like hurting Maleah. She was his friend, a girl he had grown up with and who he shared his entire life.

He neared her when she didn't say anything. There was a frown on her face and her eyes looked sad.

"Charlie?"

"I think I'm going to go out for a bit. I have a lot to think about."

"I hope it has nothing to do with what she said."

"There was some truth in it. You did this to her. We both did."

"That's life and she will get over it. She's hurt now but she'll find someone that will make her forget about me."

"That is not the point. You could easily drop me like you did with her."

"I married you. I'm not going to leave you. How can I prove to you that I love you so much more than I have ever loved anyone else?"

She shrugged. "I don't know. Right now I feel this way. Maybe we rushed things. This could have not been a good idea."

He sighed. "If it wasn't everyone would have told us." He pulled her into his arms. She resisted for a second but then leaned into him. "We made the right decision being together, moving in soon and getting married. It fits us. It works for us. I've been happy this last month and I know I will be happy for the rest of my days with you. Do you honestly regret being with me?"

"No."

"Then don't let what she said get into your head. She wanted to hurt you because that's how she feels. Do you understand?"

"Yes." She hugged him tightly then. "Do you think things will get better in time?"

"I certainly hope so. We're all family now."

They were indeed and they knew this would not be the last of Maleah.
