Chapter 137

The door to Daniel's office banged open. He wasn't surprised at seeing Maleah. He knew she would be coming in someday to get her things.

"I'd like my badge and gun please."

"Of course. I thought you would have come in as soon as you got back home." He opened up the drawer and took out her badge. He slid it across the desk where she caught it.

He had her gun in a safe on the bottom drawer. He took it out and was about to hand it to her when he realized why she might want it.

She caught on to his hesitation.

"I'm not going to kill him or her. I'm not stupid." Her tone was hard.

"I'm sorry about how this situation went about. I hope you understand that they are happy."

"I don't give a flying fuck if they are happy or not. Can I have my gun please if I promise not to murder them?"

He gave it to her. "You can come in tomorrow morning."

"I'm going to the gun range right now. I'll be back later for my uniforms."

"That's fine. Forgot that you left them here. They should be in your locker. No one has touched your stuff."

She gave a curt nod and left the office.

She was trying very hard to keep it together. Shooting something would help. She was going to the outside gun range. It would help her relax a bit or at least forget for a moment.

The drive there was short. She gave her badge number and was still on the system. She got her favorite gun and refill magazines.

She was surprised to find Ava in a slot a few down. She was wearing ear protectors and shooting a shotgun.

Maleah got into a slot and started shooting.

She didn't forget. Instead it fueled her. Nothing was going to be the same anymore. She didn't have Linc. Everything she had dreamed of for her life was gone.

She gave her heart and in return it had been torn to shreds.

There was nothing more to look forward to.

That name brought a bit of light into the darkness but she squashed it. How long would that have lasted?

Not much. They didn't have anything in common other than being accused of the a crime together.

At least now she didn't regret having slept with him. Linc had done far worse.

She finished up and took off her protecters.

"Hey! Nice meeting you here." Ava smiled brightly at her when she spotted her.

"What is someone like you doing in a place like this?"

"Someone like me? I guess I understand what you mean. I'm here because my shrink suggested it."

"You go to one of those now? What the hell happened since I left? I know a few things but nothing serious about you."

"It's nonconsequencial." Ava waved it off. "I'm doing good now and this is helping. I've actually decided what I want to do with my life."

"Which is?"

"I'm going to be a cop. I was actually going to go talk with uncle Daniel about it."

"I'm heading there now as well to get my uniforms."

"See you then, partner."

Maleah gave her a look. "It doesn't mean that we'll be together. I think I still have a partner."

"We'll see."

They both headed to the station in their own cars. When they arrived Daniel was giving a meeting to the officers and everyone there.

They listened in.

"The department has decided that a new devision be open. We need good officers who are ready to take charge. You will be trained and only a select few will make it. If you are interested please sign your name on the paper." He set down a sheet on one of the tables.

"What will be the difference between this new group from the rest of us?" Pete asked.

"For one they will have a different code of dressing as opposed to regular uniforms. They will decide what sort of vehicle to ride. Choice of gun. Let's see, have their own set of rules as opposed to officers and detectives. More rugged. For now we're calling it Special Unit, haven't decided they have a name or not."

"Got it."

"Ooh, sounds like something I would like to do. What about you?" Ava nudged Maleah.

"Maybe, I don't know."

"It might be something that will take your mind off of everything that has happened." Without mentioning specifics Ava was talking about Linc and Charlie. She was sure that Maleah must know by now.

"You're right. I need something good. I need this." Maleah moved through the officers and went to the front to put down her name.

"Hey Maleah. Great seeing you." Pete went over to her. "You look good."

"Back off Hofferman."

"What's with the hostile greeting?" He chuckled.

"Not interested in anything you have to offer. Men are asses."

"Ah, guess you found out about Linc."

"Yes. A few hours ago. Rather not talk about it."

"Sure. How about we go out for a few drinks to welcome you being back." Pete checked her over. He always thought she was hot but off limits considering that she was Linc's girl even if they weren't officially together. Then they did get together and he thought nothing could ever happen. Yet here she was, free as a bird and Caroline was gone back to wherever she worked officially for the FBI.

"Don't think so."

"Are you sure?"

"Look Pete, just because Linc and I are over doesn't mean that I'm going to go around and get into bed with his friends to get back at him. I'm not interested in anything."

"Okay if you ever are then I'm available." He winked at her.

She rolled her eyes and walked back to Ava who was talking with Daniel.

"I think this is a great opportunity for you. You can start straight away into the training. It's going to be like the academy only much more. It's three months. Think you can do it?" He asked her.

"I know I can."

"Alright then. Get your paperwork in." He left to go to his office with the paper filled with names of potentials.

"Now I guess I have to tell my parents." Ava sighed. "And Mitch. I feel nervous."

"I'm leaving now. See you around."

"Around the house you mean since we're back and we live in the same place. I hope this time we really get to know each other."

"We'll see."

"I'm positive." Ava wanted to be her cousin's friend. She probably felt lost with everything and it was up to her to make her feel good and be happy.

Maleah was not as interested in having a frienship with her cousin. She had always only had Linc and now she had no one.

She just wanted to go home and lock herself in the bedroom.

That's what she did when she got home. She went up to her room and locked the door. It had gotten upgraded thanks to Chey's boyfriend James and she thought it looked nice.

The colors were dark which was her mood at this moment.

There was a knock on her door.

"It's me, your mother. Are you okay?"

"I want to be alone mom."

There was silence but she was sure that her mom was not gone.

"Are you still there?" She called out.

"Yes. Sorry for not telling you about Lincoln. We thought it better that he tell you in person."

"It doesn't matter. I just want to be alone."

"Maybe you should call Jake."

She frowned at the door. What?

"I don't know if you two got close or not but he could have become a friend for all I know. Maybe you should invite him over and talk...what do you think?"

"Uh, no. I haven't spoken to him since we got back."

Maleah shook her head. She had no idea what was going on with her mother. Jake was not part of her regular life.

"If you need anything you can talk to me. Okay?"

"Yes, mom."

"Don't do anything stupid."

"I won't."

"See you for dinner."

She didn't answer her and continued to lay on her bed. She didn't want to think about earlier. She was not going to think of anything in the past.

Not right now.

Of course what was she going to do when it came time for the whole family to get together and she had to see Linc with his wife.

Ugh. That was not going to have a good outcome.

She closed her eyes. She could numb it all out for now.

"Is she coming down?" Katherine asked Juliet at dinner time while they were all sitting down to eat.

They should have started at six like always but it was now ten minutes past and Maleah hadn't shown up.

"I don't think she's going to. Let's just eat." Juliet told them.

"Finding out the guy you love married someone else can be a hard thing." Ava contributed. "She was firing quite a lot at the gun range."

"I wouldn't wish what happened on anyone." Chey added. "Maybe we should throw her that party you wanted aunt Juliet."

"I think so too but perhaps in another month or so. Once she's gotten over this for a bit. I hope it will cheer her up and put some different perspectives into her life."

"Please tell me you're not back to wanting to hook her up with him again?" Kerim gave Juliet a look of disdain.

"Who's the guy?" Ava asked. "Wait, is it Jake, the guy she ran off with?"

Juliet shrugged.

"Hmm, that could be a good idea. What better way to get over a guy than by getting under another." She laughed.

Chey frowned at her. "Are you ever going to change?"

"It's a good idea for her and I'm not saying she should hoe around like I did. She spent some time with this guy right? There might be some ashes there that could light up again. I'm just saying."

"Why don't we talk about you for a change. We're back from this trip and summer is going to end in another two months. What do you plan on doing? Are you going to keep mooching off our parents?"

Ava stuck out her chin. "For your information I know exactly what I want to do."

"Which is?" Dom asked.

"I want to get into the new Special Unit that is going to be formed."

"Special unit?" Katherine wasn't familiar with the term.

"A new division at the police station."

They all stared at her with incredulous looks.

Her father spoke first. "You want to be a police officer?"

"A special kind." She clarified. "I spoke to uncle Daniel and he told me what I had to do. It's going to take a couple of weeks until they start their training at the police academy. He can slip me in for that training and all I have to do is pass the three months."

"Wow. I never thought that you would look into that." Chey was definitely surprised. She couldn't picture her sister in a uniform and following the laws.

"Me neither but I found my passion. I want to do it and I know I can. I hope that I have your support."

"You do." Katherine smiled at her. Dom nodded as well.

"Hmm, guess we're going to have to look after our backs." Kerim arched a brow.

"Stay out of the prying eyes of the law and we'll see." Ava grinned. "I promise to be just like uncle Daniel and Linc. As long as you keep everyone in line we won't go snooping around the business."

"Good to know." Juliet told her. "I hope this works out for you."

"Have you told Mitch?" Chey asked her.

"Not yet. I plan on mentioning it tomorrow over breakfast. I know he'll support me in anything."

"I love him so much. He's like the son I never had." Katherine definitely approved of Mitchel. "He's romantic too. Your father told me what he helped him with on our last night on the island."

Ava's cheeks turned red. "Yeah. I'm lucky to have a guy like him. It was a really special night."

"I have my man too you know and he's romantic." Chey smacked her lips.

"I love James too. He's the other daughter I wanted." Their mother teased.

They all laughed. Yeah, James was a pretty sensitive and girlish guy sometimes. That's what Chey loved of him as well.
